I avoid Trussville unless I just absolutely have no other choice. I can't see how anyone would want to live there now. It has the facade of being upper crust but you'd have to bee a blind fool to not notice the reality of the situation there.

I believe that's true of just about every "wet" county or town other than Jefferson Co & B'ham.
There are others. Probably 15 or so counties and then more individual sales inside otherwise Sunday-restricted counties.
It takes an act of the legislature to approve either outright Sunday sales or a local referendum on them. That isn't as bad as it sounds - local bills are almost always passed if no member of the local delegation objects. Wetumpka, AL just saw their Sunday sales bill die last session because they wanted the legislature to approve it outright but one member of the local delegation wanted a referendum.
If they'd have agreed on the referendum the legislative bill would have passed and the referendum almost certainly succeeded but for some strange reason the mayor and council didn't want to let the citizens have the final say.

Birmingham is not as bad as people say, but the Mexican food in that area is terrible.

It's called Marty's pm now.
I just moved back to Atlanta after living in mountain brook for the past two years. Loved it, however I would recommend moving to south side or the Avondale, crest wood, forest park area. Very hip. Bike ride to all the bars and restaurants that matter.
Park side is the best bar in the city. Collins, octane, paramount, carrigans are all solid. Lous pub is the only lake view bar worth a shite.

La Fiesta in Hoover is good. La Bamba in homewood has new owners. I like both of those places. Little Donkey isn't bad if you like that texmex kinda stuff.

Taqueria Guzman and Los Pedro's are both bomb authentic Mexican food

Me and one of the bartenders went to Auburn together. Parkside is a cool place that they recently renovated.
When I first got married, we lived in the condos across from the Bham Botanical Gardens. That's Mnt Brook and relatively inexpensive. Lots of young college grads live in that area.

Yep, they just put in a massive development/ hotel right there. Can't imagine those duplexes staying there much longer

just avoid West Homewood.
West Homewood actually isn't that bad. I live in Edgewood, but you can get a more affordable home in West Homewood for less than Edgewood and still be in a fairly safe area close to nightlife. It's Valley Ave in Homewood you have to worry about.

Seriously though, the elevated road plan was a great idea. It would have significantly reduced traffic on that cluster frick of a road. But nooooo.....Brookies don't want an eye sore in their town.
That was never going to happen for financial reasons regardless of what Mtn Brook wants.

I live in Vestavia but work in the heart of downtown. The commute isn't bad. Of course I'm married with two kids so I'm not exactly walking or biking to bars in Southside either. About the only place I can think of where you can live and walk to those places is the Lakeview/Southside area. There are some places in downtown as well if you're looking for condos.

Birmingham is like any mid sized city in the South (New Orleans, Baton Rouge, Memphis, etc). There are really nice places and then places you pretend don't exist. Because for all practicality, they might as well not exist. I have lived in over the mountain Bham for several years now and there are major sections of Birmingham I have still never been and likely never will go to in my entire life. I have never understood the logic of saying a city is trash based solely on areas where people with jobs will never have to go in their lives?

But, wouldn't the single women in those areas be hubby-hunting for the guy who can afford to live in Mountainbrook?
Not necessarily. Mountain Brook is very clicky. If said girl went to Alabama or Auburn, then she knows whats up. Homewood is a good place if you can afford it. I really like Crestwood, but the school zone sucks for that area.

The best areas in Birmingham are Southside (Highland Av area), Downtown (lofts), Homewood, Mountain Brook, and Vestavia. There's a lot of nice apartments available on the Hwy 280 corridor, but the traffic sucks. If you can afford Mountain Brook, I'd recommend it - it's pretty, safe, and close to pretty much everything worthwhile in the Bham area. Lots of chain resturants/bars along Hwy 280, with all the best indepedent resturants Downtown, Southside, Homewood, and Mountain Brook. Bham has four breweries all near Downtown...Good People, Cahaba, Trim Tab, and Avondale. You'll have fun in Birmingham...
