I think Owen was one of those guys in the business that everyone at least respected if not liked

When the exact same thing happened to Sting (though he survived), was that fake or real?

That was a dummy in a black trenchcoat and white face paint
So they were re-creating the same type of incident, just to work the crowd?

Wow. fricking sleazebags. Glad I don't watch that shite.

It was 99 bro....people we're playing Snake on either a Nokia, a Motorola Startac, or maybe a Motorola V series if you had the funds.
No they weren't, but I figured someone would have recorded it and later uploaded it to YT.

I don;t even remember it, so I guess it wasn't very well known outside of the wrestling fan base.

So people absolutely had Nokia phones and Startacs in 99....maybe a little early for the V series. Also you think WWE just let random fans in with video cameras at PPVs? Also WWE scrubs shite from YouTube that they don't want there, besides it didn't really air on the PPV broadcast.

It was pretty well known in the national news ....wrasslin was pretty mainstream in 99.....the business had never been better for WWF.

Yeah WCW took some heat for that.

I remember JR was practically crying when he relayed the news later that night. Could barely get it out.

Still get chills when I see the video of Jim Ross breaking the news to the live audience watching

Yeah it was a rough night for commentary and all the boys....JR talked about that PPV on his podcast today and he got pretty emotional.

Your timeline is WAY off. The Sting thing was the fall of 97.

I remember Bret and Benoit did a tribute match on Nitro the next night that was pretty emotional. Jeff Jarrett used the sharpshooter for a finisher for a few weeks after that and had his own emotional tribute match on Raw.

It happened while a promo was playing on the Titantron so everyone was looking at that anyhow.

The tribute match was months later when WCW was in that same arena. They also had Harley Race make ring introductions.

Oh that makes more sense I guess.

ETA But I do think that Sting did repel down after Owen's accident and they took some heat for that.....I'm certain Bischoff discussed this in his podcast

Calm down. The Sting thing was 12/8/97, like a year and half before Owen.

You're probably thinking of Slamboree 2000 when Mike Awesome threw Kanyon off the top of the cage in the same arena.

I remember being 18

We would frick with the antenna on my brothers 13 inch tv and listen to all the pay per views perfectly. Still remember a hazy Jim Ross breaking the news about it not being fake.

The impact to the ring wasn't shown on the PPV footage....I think they cut to the announcers or an audience camera.
