The nickname originates to the Revolutionary War. British troops fought with NC troops and were impressed with their bravery. They said it was like they had tar on their heels preventing them from running away from the fight.

The first time the Tar Heel Boys flag was flown was a snowball fight in Fredericksburg, NC soldiers would face off against the Louisiana Tigers and Stonewall's Virginians.
