Do you remember the helicopter ride?

I have never sued anyone. I’ve only ever been in an ambulance that one time. But thanks, I guess for passing the cost off onto me
I see the problem, but that seems like a poor solution for a company that supposedly helps the public.

I was sent a bill for $8,000 from a hospital after my wife had passed. This was after insurance was applied. Nevertheless, I simply called and asked for a reduced amount if I paid in full that day of the call. It was a matter of holding a couple of minutes and the accounting department rep asked if I could pay $4,000. I agreed.
It’s not unusual for the medical field reps to reduce your bill so give that a shot. It works.

Don't pay it. They will eventually sell it to a credit collector who will buy it for cents on the dollar. When they start trying to collect from you you can either tell them you can pay them.. I think they pay maybe $0.20 - $0.25 on the dollar.. If its $20 they paid $540. Or you can just ignore them.
I had an issue with something when I had my gallbladder removed. I had to go in an ambulance because I couldn't move and long story short, after my insurance paid what they paid it was a similar situation as yours. Its highway robbery and I didn't pay simply on principle.

ETA: At this time I was paying $900/month for insurance that had an individual deductible of $2000 and $3000 as a family, I believe.
I haven't looked at my medical insurance in awhile, but what was your maximum out of pocket? Did your pregnancy not hit that? Your out of network maximum was higher than your pregnancy/ delivery/ hospital bill being in network?
ETA: I'd be curious what an "in network" bill would be? Any idea? Your issue here is that it was out of network. But what would your cost/ coverage have been for "in network"?
