Too many days in Rome from what I've ever heard by any one who has ever been. Delegate 2/3 of those days to other locations so you aren't moving every 20 minutes to the next city.

I lived in a suburb outside of Rome for almost 2 months. There is so much to do in Rome, 5 days isn't exactly crazy. I would definitely go to some of the smaller older cities in Tuscany, like Lucca, Siena, etc. mentioned above. If you know Italian, or you think you can get by, check out Sicily, seriously a hidden gem in my opinion.

If you want to do some hiking, it's a 6 hr train ride or so from Rome to Feltre and the Dolomite mountain range. Again, not many people visit there and it's awesome. I wouldn't waste time in Milan, but if again, if you think you have some time on hand, check out Cinque Terre.

I want to go back...

In a perfect world I'd do at least 5 days in every city, but when budgeting time you got to make the terrible sacrifice.

Part of my family is heading to Rome/Florence/Cinque Terre this summer.

I can't make it due to other trips abroad I'm taking. Will get there eventually.
