So I'm in the market for a new watch. I like a classic or vintage style watch. Really like Panerai, Sinn, Bell and Ross etc but unfortunately I can't justify that much on a watch right now.

So anyway as I was looking around various watch forums, I've come across Seiko 5 mods. Apparently you can make a Seiko 5 look like anything.

So those are all Seiko 5's supposedly. Technically, I guess I could do this myself, but how hard would it be? I'm no watchmaker for sure.
Anyone ever done this or bought one already made? I like the top one.

I pinched pennies till I could afford the Sinn. Got an 856 UTC.

Almost pulled the trigger on a seiko mod a few times.

Seiko 5's are very common and I've not heard any Seiko 5 "hate" spewed on any of the watch forums I've been on.

Do it. It's the kind of watch also that you could let anybody work on.

That first picture is pimp for the money.

Start using Nato bands and you can customize the watch to your mood.

Yep.

NATOs and any of a million well made 20-30 dollar watch bands. Leather, rubber, silicone.

I believe it's a 20mm lug. So that's very common.

Why would you ever mod a Seiko 5? Classic watch out of the box.

You can't mod watches unless you have a hand press and a crystal press. Just fyi

That's definitely my 1st choice. Seiko 5 Automatics can be had for a little over $50 on Amazon right now. Not sure how much the parts are to do it myself.

Or they're going for about $160 on eBay, already modded.

I just can't believe this is a thing. I've never even heard of modding watches until a few hours ago. Guess I'll be youtubing some videos to see how hard it actually is.

Guess I won't be modding my own

My Seiko 5. The only mod I know how to do is changing the band, which I did.

I wouldn't do an homage mod like the Sinn dial, but getting a sterile dial is good style. The case on those 5s could be cooler. I'd get a Laco Quartz if I was looking for a low cost well styled watch. Keep an eye on eBay for Aristo, Laco...if you just want an homage get a Asian watch on the cheap. I have two modded watches and I like them...but when you really look at the details there are better looking watches than even the ones you're wanting.

The one Orient I really like LINK is out of stock.
Anywhere else to buy those? Also, any idea on the case size? I prefer 38mm as I like a classic style and hate those oversized things some guys wear on their wrist

Stowa.

You wouldn't save much vs a Sinn (and the only reason why they're cheaper is that they only sell directly to customers), but Laco sells Quartz watches and sometimes very good NIB deals come up on eBay.

IMO Stowa looks better than Sinn, so I was just showing you another take on what I consider good design.

That's a fairly common looking style. You could probably find that in a seiko 5.

Unfortunately, I can't seem to find anything close on Amazon
