OT veterans thread. Have you lost someone while on mission or while deployed?

I wish it were me instead. Memorial Day always brings it to the forefront of my mind. There isn't a braver soul in the world than one willing to give their life for a country made up of varying beliefs, opinions, and backgrounds. To cast away their own desires and live and die for others. Truly, a courageous sacracifice.

Never lost a shipmate while we were out to sea or in the line of duty. Did have a shipmate that killed himself after we got back from deployment though.

His wife miscarried his child while we are on one deployment and that took it's toll on him. When we got back from the next deployment, he found out his wife left him and was pregnant with another man's baby. It was more than he could take.

Same.

ETA:

His child never met him while I got to meet mine. I will always wonder why not the other way around.

Deployed no

After we got back, yes

Helps to remind me to remember all who served, and not just those who died in combat.

Our local wear blue:run to remember group ran this am for the fallen. I ran for a guy that I never knew but he's an alum from high school several years behind me.

I can't imagine going through you guys losing friends on or off the battlefield nor will I ever understand what their families go through.

we lost one in routine training ops while deployed.

but pre-deployment... I stood in honor guard at the memorial service(memorial day weekend 30 years ago) for the 37 victims of the iraqi jet exocet strike on the USS Stark FFG31. One of the dead was a HS classmate of mine.

heard President Ronnie deliver a heck of a eulogy, saw him cry on nancy's shoulder.

had a guy in my unit drown in preps for the gulf war. father of 3......
