OT Toy Collectors - Do you keep your kids' toys?
Posted on 3/21/17 at 9:07 pm

I use to be an avid toy collector, mostly 60's-70's toys (from my childhood). I got rid of my collection before I started collecting LSU memorabilia.
Who here collects toys and do you keep your kids' toys for their future collection?
Everyone says they wish that their mother didn't throw out their toys when they were kids because the toys are valuable now.

So where the toys we played with when we were kids. My 12" GI Joes always tore up, lost pieces, dry rotted.

That is one toy that does appreciate in value (or hold value) better than most other toys, if you keep the box, instructions, etc.
I nearly bought a Limited Edition "Ghostbusters" station and Ecto One set at the Lego Store in Disney Springs. It was $200. I was going to sit on it.
They now sell for $350+.

I'm still pissed my parents got rid of my ninja turtles. Wish I could share the awesomeness of the pizza shooter with my kids one day

I've been buying them for years and years now.
Lots of stuff in boxes still. They want to open them of course but I have more than enough loose for them to play with

Probably hang on to the monster trucks and Thomas die cast trains.

I saved some transformers, micro machines, MASK, GI Joe type stuff for my kids but couldn't care less about their value

As a garage/estate sale picker, toy trains is one of the toughest things to come by. I once paid $500 for a pre-war Lionel train set and landscape (pretty basic). I knew very little about it but figured I could possibly double my money.
Come to find out, there were two cast iron street lights that were larger than the O Scale train set. After a little research, they were from some German toy train set from the 30's. They sold for $600 by themselves. I did sell the rest of the train for another $900.
Edit***
They were Macklin light post, but bigger than O Scale

My mom saved a lot our toys... the grandkids love to play with them. We're talking the good chit from the 70's, early 80's.
I'm saving some of my kids better toys and legos for the same reason.

Hottest toys on the market right now.
1st Generation Transformers and 1st Generation 3-3/4" GI Joes are worth a ton of money, but for some reason, "Masters of the Universe" toys have not taken off like the others have.

Really depends. GI Joe prices are way down, except for 1982 straight arm figures, Storm Shadow Version 1, and Snake Eyes version 2, Shipwreck, and a few army builders.
Most Transformers are also ice cold. Prices have come down tremendously over the last year. You can get a complete Optimus Prime for about half what you could last year. The only ones really holding value are Megatron, Soundwave, Trypticon, and some of the Decepticon Headmasters.
Masters of the Universe never got huge price spikes the way some of the other 80s stuff did because there was a lot more of it. There was a ton of warehouse stock in case fresh condition when the toy line's sales fizzled. Still, the 4th series figures all sell for about $50 each loose, and the original He-man goes for 30. Eternia is probably the 80s playset that commands the highest secondary market value, and the knock off lines by Remco can be worth a fortune.
Far and away the hottest 70s and 80s toy on the market right now is Star Wars, especially the original 12 and the last 17. A few years ago the last 17 figures were hovering between 50 to 80 each now they are double that.
