OT Ruling- Sleeping in Airports

Solid way to avoid an extra night in an overpriced hotel room?
Plop down on an airport bench the night before a morning flight?
Sounds genius!

Sounds miserable.
And, you are poor.

Go for the hotel room. I had to sleep in the Dallas airport once. There is zero sleep to be had. Lights, annoucemtns, and discomfort. Don’t do it.

I’ve done it before in cities waiting for flights, in NOLA; no way. I’d go home.

In the same way that sleeping under an overpass is a good way to avoid rent.

Slept under the Christmas tree outside the USO in San Diego a few times when I was single & at Pendleton. No skin off my back and caught a ride with a buddy to avoid parking costs.

I do it sometimes.
Typically when it involves, say, a midnight arrival and a 6:15am flight to follow. The three hours I could have in a hotel are not worth it.
Depending on the length of the second flight, I might bring a change of underwear and a washcloth to freshen up.
I'm 47 and I've probably done this (in one form or another), a dozen times.

Wife and I had 10 hour layover in L.A. on our way to Oahu. Chilled at Lax for 3 hours and then took uber to a Denny's for the remainder. It sucked, but saved some money and made funny memories.

did it in houston once thanks to delays, i landed late as hell one night with no connecting to NOLA until 6:30 or so next morning.
crashed at the terminal for couple hours.
this was pre 9/11 and i was a broke arse teenager (may have just turned 20) who spent the few dollars i had to my name to fly out to Virginia and back to spend 4th of July with my sister when she was stationed out there.

I've done it before. Sometimes necessary, but it sucks.

Disagree.
A nice shower and a couple hours of sleep in a comfortable bed, dark room cool AC is well worth the money
An airport Fairfield Inn is usually like $80 a night anyway

Could not have said it better.
I travel 48-50 weeks out of the year. I don’t need to smell someone on the plane because too cheap to shower.
Upvote sir!

I did at once at ATL, never again.
I didn't realize all the restaurants and bars close down every night. I figured the busiest passenger airport in the world was a 24/7 operation. I was wrong.
I had a night flight out of ATL, it was cancelled, next flight was 9AM, they gave out vouchers for hotels, everybody schlepped to the hotel shuttles, long line of course, finally get on a shuttle, goes to hotel #1, full. Hotel #2, full. Hotel #3, full, Hotel #4, full. You get the picture. I get on the next shuttle and tell them to just take me back to the airport. I figured I would get a sandwich and a couple beers and sleep on a bench.
I was wrong. At midnight everything was shut down, all the maintenance crews come out with their beep beep beeping machines, their hammer drills, their sawzalls etc. I went from terminal to terminal to terminal (train shut down, by the way, I fricking walked... with all my shite), thinking there would be some fricking terminal with open shite. All of them were closed. So I went back to my original gate and slept on the floor while construction workers made noise all night.
Apparently someone felt sorry for me because I woke up with a Delta blanket and a Chick Fil A biscuit that I didn't fall asleep with.
I will never willingly sleep in an airport again.
The worst part, is upon arrival at my destination, my hotel still didn't have my room ready. I said " I was supposed to check in last night, and the room still isn't ready?" In Montreal, they do that shite that Mexicans do and pretend they don't speak English so well when confronted on something...So I sat at their bar drinking for hours before my room was finally ready where I passed the frick out.
ETA- At the first hotel the shuttle dropped us off at, I would have gotten a room... I was the 3rd person in line, and there was a Mexican guy that spoke zero English at the front. He had a voucher too, but the clerk was being a dick to him, said his shite wasn't in order, etc, kicked him out of line, he walked away confused so I stepped out of line to try and help him. There wasn't a line at this point. He is on the phone with somebody who speaks English, a social worker trying to help him, so she is translating over the phone, there really isn't a translation for alot of the words involved in hotels and flights and paperwork etc, he is elderly and totally confused, it reminded me of my mother who got lost trying to do laundry in Italy on vacation and my dad had to find her at the police station, my heartstrings were being pulled. No progress was being made, I turned around and what had been no line was now 30 people deep, the clerk shouted "I only have 3 more rooms" and everyone hauled arse back to the shuttle and I said, "Sorry, I gotta go" and left him sitting there, confused. I still feel bad about that.

For future reference- Delta has showers and beds for rent in Atlanta. Not too crazy expensive but well worth it it.
Food and drinks 24/7. Just a FYI.

Did it in Denver one night. Actually wasn't that bad. Found a secluded area, stretched out and got a few hours of shut eye.
