OT Plumbers: Can flood water backup be caused by a severed sewer line?

Atmos contractors were replacing gas lines behind my office. They damaged the sewer line, then covered it up without fixing it. During the last rain, the toilet would not drain when flushed. We quit using it. This a.m. (after a hard rain last night) I come into the office and the carpet is soaked and clearly water came in during the rain. It is not sewer water (no smell, no toilet paper, etc). Could these be related or is there another issue (like the party wall having an issue)?

Did they not know it was damaged or were they just trying to do a hurry up job?

When you have a clogged drain line in the yard, when you use water in your house it will overflow into the home. This typically happens when a dishwasher or a washing machine is pumping water into the drain line.

They made the comment "we broke the sewer line" as they were filling up the dirt.

This seems to correlate with rain, so unless groundwater can back up the sewer line there may be some other problem. We only have a toilet and a sink.

Absolutely. If it doesn’t have a place to drain, it stays put.

I’ve seen it happen when tree roots grow through the pipes.

Water with fill the volume of its container. I doubt you have storm water back up. For it to back up to the carpet then it would have had to flood at the same level.

However, if you have a blocked or partially blocked line it could back up. Just because it didn’t smell like sewer Warren it stil could be sewer. Your a/c unit continually dumps clear water (condensate) into the sewer line while it is running.

If they broke your sewer line, they should have left the hole exposed and called a plumber, had it fixed and then paid the plumber for their services.

You shouldn’t be responsible for paying for this repair and now that poor plumber has to find the break and excavate it to make repairs.
