OT Pilots - details of Earnhardt Jr plane crash - translate this for us

Just released NTSB notes of the recent crash of Dale Earnhardt Jr plane crash. Did the pilots screw this up as bad as I think they did? Or is this normal procedure for a landing?

Included the post crash stuff just because it sounds like shite got real quick and Jr handled it like a man and got his people out.

Pope said the initial touchdown was “pretty hard” and the airplane came off the runway. The flight crew reported that thrust reversers, which help an airplane decelerate during landing, were applied after the first touchdown. Pilot Jeffrey Melton said that after thrust was increased, “the power never comes,” the NTSB reported.

“After they attempted to increase power, and they did not feel the power come, power was pulled to idle, and the thrust reversers were again applied as the airplane touched down for the third time,” the report said.

Earnhardt and the two pilots were unable to open the emergency exit door over the wing after the plane came to a hard stop, the report said.

"As they were attempting to get the rear exit door open, heavy smoke was coming from the lavatory," the report said. “Mr. Earnhardt reported that he told Mr. Melton to try the main cabin door. At this time fire was now visible in the lavatory.”

“Earnhardt then handed his daughter, who was in his arms, to the pilot, and then they each squeezed out the opening,” which was roughly the size of a conventional oven, the report said.

Witness Cheryl Campbell told the NTSB in a written statement that she was driving when she saw the rear of the aircraft burst into flames after it crash-landed. In her statement, Campbell said she had served in the Air Force and had been a flight attendant for a major airline for two decades.

Campbell told investigators that she ran to the aircraft and saw a man who was not wearing a uniform “struggling and not walking.” Campbell said she asked the man his first name but she did not directly identify Earnhardt.

“He tried to get up and could not and was asking if his wife and child were out and ok,” Campbell wrote. “I assured him I had checked his wife and child and both were ok. I also told him his dog was ok when he asked.”.

Landing is all about trading speed for altitude. He came in too hot and hopped around if I had to guess.

The Latitude is a nice aircraft, not a particularly fast one. When I read the bolded part I thought I was going to read about a X or X-plus crash. Pilots want to bring them in a little faster because they get "squirrely" on approach at lower speeds. It sounds like these guys were "doind what is best" not what the specs call for and it bit them.

They will be sued and should be, totally unlike Kobe's crash.

I’ll qualify this by saying I have never piloted any type of jet. But landing at the correct speed is critical, more so in a jet. That was 100% pilot error. That guy got a 709 ride fo sho!

The Cessna Citation Latitude needs about 2600ft of runway to land. The airport they were landing at had about a 5000ft runway.

The pilot should have eased back on the power and speed once landing was assured. What he really should have done was initiate a go around if he knew he was too fast not mention trying to go around after the first time he bounced.

The landing gear didn’t come off until the third impact with the runway and by that time there was not enough pavement left to takeoff even if full power was achieved.

The pilots didn’t set themselves up for a good landing. But made the right decision given the circumstances after the third impact.

A good landing starts with a good approach. On altitude and on speed.

Looks like a bounced landing and attempted go around but the throttles were already in reverse.

110% pilot error. No reason they shouldn’t have pulled off a safe landing in those conditions assuming the plane was mechanically perfect.
