Small cove on a lake in rural Arkansas
End Cut of a white oak board taken from northern Alabama.
I am making a book if different species of hardwoods I come across in life.
Beautiful sunset in rural Alabama
And I'll end with this

I'll just post this here instead of starting my own thread. I'm looking to get a beginner DSLR and am between Nikon and Cannon. I know that once you buy a brand and start buying lenses it is best to stick with a single brand so you don't have to sell and buy all new lenses when you upgrade the body. So, any opinions one way or the other as to which is the better buy?

Thanks, Wick
As far as Canon v Nikon, go play with them in BestBuy and see which feels better in your hand and how you like the menus on both. Neither will give you better output than the other, and neither has a better lens selection, and anyone who says so is full of shite. I liked how Canon's menu is designed, I can navigate it quickly, and the rotary dial on the back's placement in relation to the rest of the buttons. feels natural to me. Also consider whether or not you have friends with one particular brand, because that's access to trade and borrow lenses.

I am a hobbyist with no training, I am learning slowly when I have time to get out and shoot...

Thanks. I will for sure mess around with each of them before buying.

Lake Martin this weekend:
I took this photo a few years ago in Manhattan, but only a few weeks ago experimented with the tilt-shift effect in Photoshop, trying for the "toy village" look:

Same here. I could never do this for a living, because I'm pretty sure I'd hate it. I have enough trouble staying motivated as it is now and have to push myself to get out and shoot. Going out with a friend this weekend to shoot his car again with newer wheels.

Why do you say you'd hate it? The friend I mentioned earlier loves her career.

Nice! I really like that first take. Much lighter and sharper.
Thanks for reminding me why I try to avoid toning photos on my laptop in energy-saving mode.
