I’d say Ruston is a good comparison. Both places are growing and have more of a small college town feel

You’d have to pay me to move there. I live in New Orleans though...

That came off as very douchy. IMO. Had to throw in that you live in New Orleans though as if everyone is dying to live there.

It's a hot take but Hammond may be a better place to live than Covington/Mandeville. Closer to BR/NOLA, has less traffic, less taxes, more restaurants/bars

Hammond is now a magnet school, which means it is much better than in the past. However, it is a tall climb out of that hole. That being said, I would not rule it out as a result of the changes that were made.

The magnet program has less than 40 kids and they are still in the hallways and interact with the general pop the entire day. That aspect has not changed and will not change, especially once deseg is over and they are forced to keep their bad eggs.

It's way easier to avoid the trash in Ruston. However, by doing that you'll be running with the faux wealthy Squire Creek elitist. Hammond has more of the laissez-faire Southern Louisiana atmosphere (which in my opinion is better), but Ruston is the nicer place.

To answer the OP, I've always enjoyed my time in Hammond, but everytime I've been it's been with some buddies who are part of what seems to be the small group of families that owns the city (not the Edwards, whoever they may be)

Ruston is really growing right now. Plus it’s a decent place with not as much culcha as other cities in LA.

OT Opinions on Hammond?

If you are moving to this area you will like Ponchatoula much better for raising a family.

Schools are horrible. They just elected a new School Board Superintendent, so maybe that will help... but doubtful. Tangi School board is full of politicians.

Ponchatoula schools are the best in the parish. It is strange in a way it is almost like Ponchatoula isn't even in Tangipohoa. The school board doesn't frick with Ponchatoula Schools.

If you want to go to public schools but be close to Hammond consider Springfield.

You must be joking? While Livingston schools are top notch among public schools, Springfield is hot garbage.

Springfield is ranked higher than Ponchatoula now I believe.

I really like living in Hammond. If you can afford to live walking distance to downtown, it makes for a great quality of life. It's easily better than Ponchy, but if your really worried about public schools, Albany would deserve a look. Once again, if you can afford to live within a few miles of downtown/SLU area, the Lab school is one of the best public schools in the state, not just the parish.
The restaurants and bars downtown are the main draw. If you like hanging out, there are so many places. I have season SLU baseball, football, and basketball games. They are inexpensive and it's a great time. Baseball season was a blast. There's a few nice gyms, Sopga and North Cypress.
We could use a bike path like the Trace, better schools, and a little less poverty.

Both Hammond and Ponchatoula have some good downtown vibes and neat redevelopments happening.

What do you want to see?

Or what’s so crappy about that that makes you comfortable commenting like a big shot but revealing you are a simpleton jackass?

Decent place to live and raise a family or nah?

I was born and raised in Hammond and still have some family there. Like others mentioned you're within driving distance to NOLA/BR, lots a place to eat and decent nightlife. For a small town there are quite a few amenities. Downtown from time to time likes to hold small events like BBQ contest or something along those lines. Have one day Like shot August nights where downtown stays open and people walk around and have a drink and socialize. As far as owning a home, the newer and nicer homes are in ponchatoula.

As far as schools I had went to Holy Ghost which is fairly good. As for as High schools if sending your kid to a public one make sure they're in the college prep program or you're just sending them to a juvenile daycare. Healthcare access is pretty good. Tons of doctors and the North Oaks hospital is right there.

If you have an opportunity to drive there and look around, do so and see it's a right fit for you.
