without a doubt, but is the solution to just give up and let "them" have it? where I work I'm also involved with recruitment and hiring and work with new hires after they start with us, with at least 50% of them coming from the military, I even help them find positions with other companies if they want to go in a different direction, and even help some of them find reserve jobs, the aviation community may be a more motivated group than a lot of the military, and no I'm not currently active duty, but I've got a pretty good feel for what's going on

ETA: and I take back the "whiner" part, I wouldn't use that term if I weren't posting on this place, apologies

This 100%…this young man needs to enlist and develop discipline and grit. Finish his degree while enlisted or pop smoke and finish on GI bill.

With this DEI crap being shoved down the military’s throats it’ll be worse for the officer corps.

all good, it's the OT - we all go off half-cocked, it's part of the charm!

experiences vary widely across the military obviously. many flying squadrons in the Navy are probably still pretty solid culturally, just like many infantry battalions in the Corps are the same. the problem is the TREND appears to be going nowhere good - and getting there in a hurry. i have spent the last few years working at higher level headquarters, so i am, admittedly, pretty jaded and pessimistic about where i see the military going culturally. hopefully i'm wrong, but i dont think i am.

and to your question:

certainly not, which is why i'm still here slogging through and fighting the good fight. but it's a beat down.

I retired a year ago and the impact of cultural stuff was insignificant at worst a minor distraction for a couple hours a year. We used to worry lifting dont ask dont tell was going to wreck morale and good order but troops didnt seem to mind even when they had to bunk with others of a different orientation.

The real stresses on the force are unrelenting ops tempo, ever increasing workload, and support functions foisted upon operations (even worse since COVID moved finance and other roles virtual). We pushed our all volunteer force at an unsustainable pace for over 20 years after Sept 11 and have shown little or no intent to slow since withdrawal from Afghanistan. The children of that generation of warriors are now our prime recruiting pool and they've either seen the grueling pace themselves and/or are dissuaded by their elders. (Not to mention how few candidates are fit for servicd to begin with)

The military cultural issue that gets too little attention is how military has been slow/unwilling to adjust to realities of modern families. An increasingly educated and technical enlisted and officer corps is more likely to have educated professional spouses. The (in my opinion unnecessarily frequent) moves create barriers to spouse employment/career progress, excess family stress, and drive many of our most talented (and often ones with the most stable spouses/families) to separate early. By failing to adapt to modern realities we are limiting our pool of educated professionals.

When were you at OCS if you don't mind me asking? Are you currently in New Orleans? Just wondering if he have crossed paths before?

didn't you go to work for the airlines and remain in reserves? anyway, I see very few guys coming to the end of their post wing contracts that are throwing their hands up in frustration and want a clean cut from the mil and put it all behind them, most have reserve gigs lined up or are looking for one, another trend I'm seeing, and this has less than altruistic motives , is get an airline gig, i.e. a seniority number, and get orders cut to go back active duty immediately after training/consolidation

Sorry. I was just connecting the dots that you might be in New Orleans since Northshore is part of your username and reading your posts on here I think we might know either each other or at least know some of the same people. Either way, SF!

How does he feel about gays and trannies? Because our military is pretty big into that now.

My nephew is applying to Westpoint, and there was a bunch of questions he had to answer on the application about leading gays and trannies into battle.

Going in the LA Guard would be a good option as they'll pay for tuition and he can do the dual option and have his upper division ROTC time count for pay/retirement purposes.

If I was in his situation, I'd graduate first. Then go see a recruiter. Enlist with OCS in my contract. Profit.

My grandson is not a whiner and I’m glad you retracted that comment.

I clearly said he didn’t say much about,it ,just seemed dis-heartened.The fact he said he was going to get out when his obligation is up is what was shocking to me.
Maybe he’ll stay in reserves,he didn’t mention it.

He graduated high school with 4.0 avg, lettered 3 years in football and was on power lifting team 4 years.Never once complained,in fact he relished it.

Graduated summa cum laude,Tulane.Loved summer cruises, loved flight school.

I have a inkling of what discouraged him.I was on Shore Patrol for 22 months in Rota Spain early 70’s.The security officer was a Commander,4-5 nights a week one of our units was dispatched to pick him up from an officer party and bring him home.Apparently his wife would leave early.
One night I asked him if he didn’t get tired of going to parties so many nights a week.He said yes he did but “that’s how you get ahead in this man’s Navy”.

I thought to myself, isn’t that wonderful.promotions not based on merit but a$$ kissing.Of course,I didn’t say that.It did seal my decision to get out rather than re-enlist.I’m pretty sure that situation has only gotten worse.
Col. David Hackworth clearly stated it in his book that warriors don”’t make flag officer.Just political hacks,He called them”perfumed princes”.

I have another smart grandson, graduated high school with 4.0,33 ACT ,A in physics
Navy recruiter offered him $30k sign on bonus for 6 year enlistment in nuclear Navy.I told him to forget about it,white heterosexual male,he’d be at a distinct disadvantage for promotions, duty stations, etc.

He got an academic scholarship, majoring in medical physics and doing well. His professor had him involved in sort of research project over the summer.La Tech even put out a brochure promoting their Medical Physics program with his picture and him stating how much he enjoys the curriculum, blah, blah.

There was a time I would have been proud for him to join the Navy but I fear the modern Navy is a disaster.
Ship collisions, constant firing of commanding officers, failure of the Littoral Combat Ship program with billions of dollars down the drain.
It’s not looking good for them, nor our country for that matter.

Depending on what language he speaks, he may be better off in the Air Force.

My reasoning? A friend's son just enlisted, didn't finish college but must have tested really well as the AF is teaching him Korean. In the '80's I also had a friend in the AF that spoke Farsi...he sat in a listening station on a Mediterranean island listening to conversations.
