It's a big problem with those 4 cylinder engines. I'm about to bring my wife's camry to see if it qualifies for the fix. It goes through a good bit of oil.

So what exactly is wrong? You said no smoke or drips, so it was just low on oil?
Timing belt is probably not causing that issue. Time melt is really routine maintenance because it needs to be changed every 100 miles.
Just have your boyfriend check it when he comes over.

The timing belt was off causing it to stall and rumble. I thought it was the spark plugs but whatever, it's solved now.

Bc the first mechanic I saw told me it was due to lack of oil.

Oil usage is one of two things. Leak or bad rings causing you to burn oil.

Well valve guides would be easy to get to in an dohc engine. But why call that "wrong" when you have troll posts?
Generally leaks or bad rings is what would cause a mechanic to want to pull an engine. Valve guides are a top end fix and you would only have to pull the head off.

you're right though, I didn't think of valve guides. I generally point to front or rear seal when losing massive amounts of oil. My first car was a volvo with a bad rear seal. I just had to keep topping the oil off and keep the rpms under 3500. One day I went over 4000 and blew the engine, and that was when I first picked up a set of tools and worked on a car (swapped the engine with a $100 donor car engine).
