I own a 2008 Toyota RAV4 and I have read about a major issue with them being excessive oil usage. What problems can stem from this over time, is there anything I should do to help fight this? Honestly, any advice would be appreciated because when I tried to bring it to a shop, they wanted to take out my entire engine.

LMAO Just keep it topped up. Check it every so often.

Oil usage is one of two things. Leak or bad rings causing you to burn oil.

A leak is much better of the two, even if a main seal, burning oil you need a rebuild so it's better to keep topping off.

Can you elaborate on the rings issue?

The three main functions of piston rings in reciprocating engines are : Sealing the combustion chamber so that there is no transfer of gases from the combustion chamber to the crank. Supporting heat transfer from the piston to the cylinder wall. Regulating engine oil consumption.

If oil gets past the rings, it burns off.

Do you leave drops of oil or puddles on driveways?

Do you ever notice smoke from your exhaust pipe, especially at open throttle?

you need to make sure the rotator near the disc belt isn't pinching the D-line or that could be causing your issue. The only way the RAV4 would need a new engine was if the coil resonator had been ruptured or torn from the heat gauge manifold.

How do I check that? Is there a way to tell if that's the issue?

he's trolling.

Leak, or engine burn, only two ways you get low on oil.

All engines will lose a little oil to burn, but generally less than a half quart per oil change.

I don't know how much you are losing. No leaks at all, not even a tiny valve cover gasket leak? Small leaks are common when engines get over 100k.

Check pcv system and keep an eye on the oil level otherwise the engine is coming out for a rebuild.

Here's the most likely answer:

LINK

You can try running a little bit thicker oil than the 5w it calls for and it may slow it down some. The reason you are not seeing smoke is because the catalytic converters are pretty good at burning off excess hydrocarbons.
