Electric fan or mechanical?
Had a similar problem with a Honda Accord. Turned out the electric condenser fan motor was not working. Maybe check that, if yours is electric too?
Was going to say the same thing. This happened to my Jeep shortly before it started running hot due to the fan going out. A/C stopped blowing cold and just figured the A/c was going out. Couple days later the fan went out completely. Replaced the fan and got my nice cold a/c back

quote:Maybe but since it cools at high speed its probably the cooling fan imo. (not an expert obviously just chiming in)
vehicle has electric actuators. Could be a faulty blend door actuator tho

AC cools only when driving. When at a standstill for a light not cooling.
see my post above. If you have a two stage fan (one for cooling engine and one stage for the A/C) and your not moving thus pushing air thru the radiator to cool the condenser, it will shut off to protect itself. Check the fan

Had the same problem with an 07 Silverado, it turned out to be the blower motor resistor. Cheap part and cheap repair..

More than likely the compressor is failing. If you recharge it, it works fine for awhile, then goes back to its current state, it's likely busted. However, research the safety switches that may go bad. It'll be worth the $20-$30 to replace those before shelling out $1k for the compressor.

repairpal.com only quotes 578-842 for air compressor replacement, parts and labor.

Had this issue in an '99 Silverado back when I was in college. Compressor was failing. Started getting to the point that it took higher and higher speeds to get cool air. Then after a while, nothing at all. Not 100% sure, but sounds like a compressor to me. I know the compressor itself was like a $200 part at the time. But on the Silverado, you had to damn near take the whole front end down to replace it. I was quoted like $1800. Looked into doing it myself and found it was extremely difficult, and that quote was actually a good price.

still not that bad. Had its own belt that ran it

But to access it was a pain. Know a guy who runs a refrigeration company and is very mechanically inclined and does this kind of stuff regularly. He actually had a Silverado himself at the time and is the type to do a lot of work himself, so he was very familiar. Took it to him for an opinion to work on it myself and he said he wouldn't do it as a favor for the price that the place quoted me. The actual changing of the compressor wasn't bad at all. Getting to it took a lot of work.

That sounds low. My quote was $1100 by an indie shop. A compressor change isn't hard, it just required a bunch of equipment to capture the refridgerent.

you lift the vehicle up, remove the right wheel and inner wheel well. Remove compressor.
It's very easy

Don't you love it! What horseshite.

How about a good cleaning of the radiator and condenser coils with a garden hose..... Cheap.
