yeah the ethics/professionalism stuff is just another sign of how draconian and out-dated the regulation of the legal profession is

Frankly, the entire CLE process is absurd. I watch utterly incompetent attorneys play with their phones while sitting through a full day CLE covering topics that have little to no impact on their actual practice. At this point, it's more of a protected cottage industry than anything useful or worthwhile.
Now, that isn't to say that there aren't excellent CLE opportunities out there, because there are. It's simply that no one is required to go to any of them.

oh yeah it's a joke
i seek out interesting CLEs to learn things or maintain my knowledge
most lawyers i know either use them as a means to write off vacations (around the US) or they wait until December and frick off for 12.5 hours over a couple days somewhere

My experience, as well. Yet, it's the one thing that pretty much gets you instantly suspended if you don't do it

I’ve never needed to go into January, but I might have borrowed a laptop at a NYE party once...

Technically, yes. But practically, it’s improbable.
P.s. I’m not your lawyer. Just an internet yahoo with access to a keyboard.

WTF does that mean? It's either legally enforceable or it's not.

I’ll never sign another one. Can be beat, but depends on how much money you have. Have they sent a letter enforcing the non-compete? Mine included all the parishes, every county in Texas and North Dakota lol. Some people are just overly protective. If you have a solid buisness, one employee won’t make that big of a difference..

I think he was referring to it being enforceable in every parish. Louisiana has a ton of parishes; there aren’t many businesses that have a physical presence or substantial amount of customers in every single one.
I’m not saying those companies don’t exist, but they aren’t the norm.

Judges don’t like telling people they can’t work.

They can, I’ve had an employer win several cases against employees because of the non compete clause. They do have to list every Parish and city or it’s void. Thats a company id never want to work for to begin with. Selfish owner probably who isn’t interested in why good employees leave. They just want to blame someone else and punish them. Hixson Autoplex in Monroe is such a place. The worst owners in the state.
