March of 1989 I was with a group of gentlemen a little older than me training retrievers in the spillway about a mile and a half away from the "RC airfield" and some guy that was flying his toy away from the airfield over by us - thought he was being funny by buzzing us and the dogs. He kept getting closer and closer so finally we had enough I was sent over to politely ask him to stop. He basically told me.. F You- I can do what I want where I want - ya'll move.... I said if you buzz us again I'll shoot it down. He did.... two shots from a 16 ga sent his toy plummeting into the pond we were working the dogs in..... he and his three buddies came running over and he was all mouth screaming and hollering that I owed him 400 dollars... I said "it's in my wallet in my back left pocket - come get it..... ]
a few more pleasantries were exchanged and I got him to take a swing at me - and it did not go well for him....he buddies decided it was best to let this go.... about 40 minutes later he showed back up with deputies.... we told our story he told his...... nothing happened.... shortly after that - all RC flying in spillway was confined to the "airfield" area...... 2 3/4 steel 4 shot did the trick....

The FAA registration number is/should be clearly marked on the drone.

Here’s what I would do to avoid jail time: Get a cheap drone or helicopter and launch it when his is over your property. Get above his drone and lower yours onto his propellers. Keep his drone. This will either solve the problem or draw him to your doorstep, where you can beat his arse if necessary without catching a charge.

Sure if you want to go to prison.. go for it. The just will give you a clear message. Take care of your family before you do it though.. no use in leaving them hanging because of your mistake.

Use a silencer and he'll never know who shot it out of the air.
