Comprised is correct in his sentence (although he should have omitted "of"). The whole comprises the parts. The parts compose the whole.

Wait, are you arguing that "The group is known as leaders and is believed is comprised of most of the people remaining from the village" would be correct usage of comprise and its conjugates?
