I would never work for a company that asks this type of stupid fricking hypothetical on a job application.
It's complex and abstract problem solving.
Like I know my last answer wasn't the best, so I would need to address the weaknesses in my plan to create a new one. You have to show them how you work through problems that may not have answers. They want to see the reasoning.

If that’s what you perceive to be a temper tantrum as opposed to showing the fault in your logic, I truly feel sorry for you.

Then you could have a machine gun with 10,000 rounds and you'll never give them a 0.0% chance of survival. You're way too far away to deal with them with a single gun, at that point.
There is always a non-zero chance if we are to consider true probability.

The problem is, you didn't.
And, again, you're ignoring the parameters. You're fighting with the question, not me.
You've made this fight with the parameters into a personal thing with me, to add to your previous temper tantrum.

frick them, and frick their interview process.

Convince them that death is a certainty for all.

First make a medieval knight costume complete with helmet and cardboard sword. Now paint the costume black. Next, build a flimsy bridge over a 5 foot wide creek. Lastly, stand at the far side of the bridge, and anytime anyone says anything to you, say "None Shall Pass." very loudly.

It is all a matter of perspective, and if you control the narrative, you control their perspective.
It’s like how our politics work.
The other group wants to escape so you all will die.
The only way to live is to prevent the other group from escaping.

Inform the murderers that the last man standing gets his freedom. Allow them to settle it amongst themselves. Shoot the survivor.

quote:Fantastic answer, but the question is asking how to prevent them from escaping, and the premise states that you are guarding them as opposed to battling / fighting them.

The more I think about it, yours is by far the best answer so far.

Grant them all their freedom. Nobody escapes if you let them go free
This was my answer.
The one BlackRock is looking for is probably some bullshite psychobabble that requires some lengthy discussion with 100 murderers to relay your threat to them to keep them in line.
In reality, if they are in a field, and can run away the opposite direction, at least half are already likely out of range.

What field was this interview for?
Posted on 7/13/24 at 4:26 pm to boomtown143
Answer is easy: If there is an escape attempt, one of them will be killed at random. Thus, there is never a "zero probability" of escaping without death and so none of them will escape.
Posted on 7/13/24 at 4:32 pm to boomtown143
“The first murderer to attempt an escape will be shot in the head. The rest of you will be allowed to go free after one of you attempts an escape.” Don’t over complicate it. You only have to convince them the first to attempt will certainly die. They will all wait forever for the first to attempt.
The question in posed to see if you are capable of critical thinking and problem solving. Don’t over complicate it. Show then you can stay focused and problem solve efficiently.

quote:I don't think so. If a person is running away, there's always a chance the shot could miss.
Thus, there is never a "zero probability" of escaping without death and so none of them will escape.
Say you miss the first shot, then another tries to escape and you have no more bullets. Then it's all over

I feel like the field makes a difference
Everyone I employee needs to have a solution oriented critical thinking approach. I don’t know much about your field but I’d love to hear their feedback.
