Interestingly, Mechanical Engineering has changed very little in the last 60 years.
My Dad's thermo book from 1946 is the same except not in SI units.

You realize that thermodynamics is applied physics right? Nothing has really changed in physics in a long time.

Make sure he understand the difference between HS and college.
Learning time management is the key. Also, make sure he is aware of all the little details about which classes to take and when.

I didnt even take calc in HS and graduated in ME. Dont need to do any preparing unless testing out of physics 1100 maybe. They teach it to you, you just have to have the intelligence and work ethic. Plan on 5 years so you don't get any false ideas or unneeded stress. The extra year will pay for itself with the degree. Realize that it takes work and sometimes your teacher will suck and you have to find your own way to learn. Thats all you need to know.

is there anything you'd recommend he do so that he is ready to go when classes start?
Go to class and pay attention while you're there.
Didn't read this thread, but this is the key.

shite all of the math we learn in school is from the 1800s or earlier, unless it's something involving computer based algorithms.

Almost everyone I was in class with got an engineering degree with a minor in cheating. I honestly couldn't imagine going through all those classes without the help of prior people's work.
I know this is the OT where such things are celebrated. But I will still register my disgust with such attitudes.

Leave him alone. It's college. He needs to do the work because he wants to do it....and NOT before his freshman year even begins!
