Had this done earlier this week. My dad had a quintuple bypass at my age, so doc wanted me to get a scan.

Score came back as 18. I'm scheduled for my annual physical next month so won't talk to my doctor until then.

Is that a decent score? What is it that is being scored?

A score of 18 at 62 is pretty normal for age. If you are assymptomatic might consider a low dose statin if you arent on one and repeat scan in 5 years if no symptoms pop up

A score of zero means no calcium is seen in the heart. ...
When calcium is present, the higher the score, the higher your risk of heart disease.
A score of 100 to 300 means moderate plaque deposits.

Eta: You need more calcium if you wanna have a heart attack anytime soon

Will low dose statins reverse calcified plaques?

I'll tell the wife. She may want to cash in on the life insurance and power load calcium into my meals.

My PCP noted that my score of 5 indicated "some cardiovascular changes" But the cardiologist who interpreted the scan said 5 might as well be zero and I was a healthy man. But I moved from Prevastatin to Crestor on advice from PCP. 18 is above the 0 to 10 first category but far from being high. My wife who has a total cholesterol of about 260 had a CCS of 0.

That's great, but you can still have significant non calcified plaque that isn't measured.

PCP doesn't seem to be concerned about it. Talks about genetics. I don't know how long it's been since I've heard of a non-smoking female having a heart attack or coronary artery disease. I'm sure it is common but I just haven't seen it much lately.

It’s not a specific nor a very sensitive test, obviously zero would be great but there are othe much more sensitive and specific tests such as nuclear percussion scans that can really tell you what you have going on, and obviously an angiogram is the most specific. I wouldn’t worry right now.

I have recommended this to everyone as it probably saved my life. It caught a problem when everything else said I was fine. My doctor had been trying to get me to do it forever. When my 5 mile a day jogging marine buddy who could still press 350 dropped death of massive heart attack I caved, ( He had complete physical few months before and was healthy as horse) Your score is fine, don’t ask mine.

I too want to do this scan. Cost about $100 I think.

I'm away from home now but I will link an interesting video later.

There are vitamins you can take to actually reduce calcium build up.

Statins don't do shite.

I think we talked around the CC score but it measures your stable calcified plaque lining the arteries. With the buildup of stable plaque there is a correlative risk of unstable or mobil plaque that can cause a blockage/heart attack. The number or reading I believe it is a reflectivity measurement from a CT scan. Now I'm not close to being a physician but your 18 is probably pretty modest for a 62 YO and that's been covered here. And I don't think we can reverse stable calcified plaque (covered also) but medication can/rather does lower LDL cholesterol. So recently my doc wanted to reduce my LDL from about 76 to below 70. Crestor reduced it to about 50.
