Get her a F-250 and a bass boat instead of a ring. You’ll thank me later.

If you are thinking 3 carats, why not just bump it to 5 or 6.

OT answer: they make diamonds smaller than 5 carats???
real answer... hers is 1.75 carat...but excellent clarity and color.... these two factors are really more important than size when talking about a diamonds true value... plus a smaller diamond that shines like hell when the light hits it is usually more impressive than a big dull one.

So, how big of an engagement ring does the OT baller buy his GF?
You should spend 3 years income on that bad boy.

If you are going into this thinking size first, you will end up with a shitty ring. Quality of stone first, then budget for size. A nearly flawless 1 ct is a good starting place. Lessor quality is a poor investment.

Kinda what I’m thinking frankly. If I’m going to spend 50k on a 3.5 emerald, might as well spend 75k on a 4.5 emerald. The fricked up thing is I could get 3.5 oval for 40k or a 5 oval for 65k. Ovals are much cheaper than emeralds for some reason. Ovals are very pretty I think nevertheless.
We went and looked today. She likes both. Looking like she’s going for the bigger oval than emerald. I’ll get her the traps for anniversary.
I appreciate all the advice, assholes... :)
ETA: and we can trade it in whenever we want to upgrade and they will buy it back for what we paid for it, and put towards and new one. So, frick it.

I went with a simple halo around emerald cut 1.2c center, IF, G color set in platinum with some unique side diamonds- they're Fleur de Lis.
The platinum was because I find the concept of re-plating gold to be silly and the way it is capable of more or less "self healing" with day to day scratches was pretty cool. I also told myself the setting is less likely to loosen a prong and give up a stone.
Thought about a lab-created diamond (NOT moissanite or similar diamond analog), but they weren't much cheaper and The Mrs loves rocks and "really wanted something that came from the ground." She did say certain gemstones would have been cool, too, but I felt like it would require constant explanation and be an attention-grabber, neither of which is our style.

Let me guess — you bought a 1.5 F S1 with a bunch of trashy pave diamonds around it to make it look like a 3.5...and you went to Sandals because your an all inclusive guy. Right? What club you belong to bro? Enlighten me.

You should bump this thread with pics of the rock after you decide.

50k on a ring isn’t a good idea

Neither is paying $70k at 1500 a month for a truck that depreciates, while I can trade the diamond in 10 years later and get the same price back towards something else.

Why on earth would you let her pick out her engagement ring? That's the ONLY thing you have to do in all of this...pick out s ring, ask her to marry you. Then the train is rolling and you get to sit back and nod yes.
You going to ask her how she wants you to pop the question too?
