Knowing what I know now, I think it would be a mistake if you are really going for speed/time.

The average person is not going to add a ton of mass from weight training. Definitely not enough to effect their running.

Don't you think weight training has a lot more health benefits than running?

I'm 30 and run fairly regularly. If I'm doing just a 5k, then I'm in the 24 minute range. I'm not a speed guy at all. If more than a 5k, my mile pace definitely slows a minute or two depending on the total distance. I'm just under 9:50 for a half, and I won't say my full pace because it's embarrassingly slow.

Agreed.

7 min miles put in the 1% (percentile)

Keep in mind though that a number of those larger races are comprised of individuals who run casually and are more interested in the social aspect and the accompanying bumper sticker rather than the actual challenge.

If you took around 500 healthy males between the ages of 18-30 and had them partake in a serious endurance regiment (e.g. running and cross-training 4+ days each week, maintaining a healthy diet, and participating in at least a twelve week training program) I guarantee that individuals running seven-minute splits would be in the bottom half of such a group.

I am always curious about the runners here.....Do most of you weight train as well? If not why?

Yes, but now that I'm older (39), I focus more time on cardio. I lift enough just to maintain muscle memory. I'm not interested in bench pressing a Volkswagen anymore.

Just curious, but why do you focus on cardio?

To burn fat and to stay in good shape. No matter how hard I lift, I've found it does very little for true cardio endurance. Running hard for 30 minutes keeps my heart rate elevated and burns more fat than weight training in that same time window.

Just my opinion, but no.

The cardio and overall fitness you get from running 10-15 miles a week is hard to duplicate with weights.

I am in no way a expert, though.

Well, that is kind of apples and oranges to what we are talking about here, right?

I am 25 and i do more cardio than anything. Well currently doing p90x3 but before i when i was going the gym/running. I was just doing it to stay somewhat strong and because i like leg day.

I also just enjoy running more than lifting weights, it is really easy for me to skip a few reps but its hard for me get home when i am 3 miles away.

I would think intense circuit training burns more calories than running especially throughout the day.

When you say "circuit training," are you basically stating to lift weights for 30 minutes straight with no breaks in between sets?

Basically. Doing a full body workout going from exercise to exercise and taking a break between each circuit.

I'm 43 and ran 1st outdoor 5k in May, finished 27:52. Stamina was good (no cramping/legs felt good), but breathing in hot, humid air was tough. I had to slow down a few times. A 11 year kid almost beat me and 70 a year old did.

Guy who won ran in under 19 mins.

OMG what's the point of running a fast 5k aren't most of them for charity? Run at your own pase and give $ to the charity it's not a competition. Is it?

There is nothing wrong with a 25 minute 5k time.

I'm over 50 and my last 5k time was 23:00. that was a bad day as I didn't feel the greatest. My usual time is around 20:00 +-.30
