Considering it was in fact his partner who was in the bathroom and not a burglar, I think the only defense he'd have for manslaughter would be if he was high as a kite on drugs or alcohol and thus had impaired reasoning.

Just a friendly reminder. Be glad you live in the US. As much as our justice system is flawed, its the best model we have on this planet.
Exactly! It is the fairest to the accused of any legal system in the world.

I think - and forgive me, I didn't look it back up - that the framework of his story relies on a couple of things:
1. He didn't know she was home.
2. He speculated she may have been trying to surprise him (I think it was his birthday or something?)
Now, that sounds like bullshite. But who knows?

frickING creepy pic. Sorry, but it's weird. Wanted to make OJ - glove reference to stumps, but couldn't.

It was Valentine's Day.

Yeah, I jacked that up. He said he thought she was still in bed.
So, upon reviewing that, his story is even crazier and less likely. If he knew she was home, then he would have taken an additional step of making sure it wasn't her in the bathroom. I get that he had generalized anxiety disorder.
Here is what I think ACTUALLY happened. They had a fight. She locked herself in the bathroom and, perhaps sat on the floor blocking the door. Hell, maybe she took his legs in there with her.
He, having watched too many movies, decided he would shoot the lock out or whatever was going through his mind. She stops responding. He realizes what might have happened, beats the door down with a cricket bat and is found praying over the body when help arrives.
Why he chose to go with the "intruder" route - maybe that was his lawyer's best advice on how to dodge prison at all. He's, more or less, getting what he deserves, but if he had told the absolute truth from the beginning, maybe there would be more sympathy and the sentence could be even lighter.
At least, that's my dimestore novel detective sketch of what happened.
On the other hand, there could have been a fight over infidelity, money, whatever and he lost his temper and shot her. I just don't see any solid evidence of this, either.

If the blade doesn't fit you must acquit.

As a South African, I know most murders there go unsolved and the police departments are way too backed up to do even precursory investigations for most crimes. Country is a disaster.

Did he do it or not? Frankly, I'm stumped!

He did "it" but the question is whether or not it was intentional.

Yeah, a lot of folks thought he was going to walk.
