re: Optometry: LA HB 1065/SB 568: What if your Louisiana Eye Surgeon is NOT an MD?

Oilman, talk some smack, but until you've at least watched a few of these, I think it's not your place to comment.
First, do no harm.
And i have no clue what the reference to bigpharma was.

MDs get a crappy ink pen and an occasional lunch for pushing that patient into getting that drug they don't need.
My proof about the ODs has already been stated by someone else in this thread. The ODs biggest point during this has been that there are under served areas in the state for eye surgery by MDs. That's just flat out false. 85% of ODs are in the same town as an MD, and 14% are within 15 miles. The farthest distance between an MD and an OD Is 35 miles in one location. And even if there were under served areas, only one of these procedures is ever performed emergently. So, if they're lying about that, what do you think the big motivating factor for them is?

Bill is suppose to be about access to care.
And as has been stated, that access to care has been grossly misstated by your fellow ODs.
I forgot to add the Louisiana has more ophthalmologists per capita than any neighboring state, including Texas.

Have at it, Dew. You'll be able to get your eye surgery at Walmart with a roll back price real soon if you want.

I wonder if they'll manage to end all of their surgery prices with $.98 too?

So they're going to go in cold and ruin people's sight left and right, and the answer to that is legislation spelling out what their training should be, just like everything in "real" medicine and surgery.
No. The question is why they refuse to use the standards that are already set forth under the board that already exists with regards to the "comparable training" mentioned earlier.

This is ridiculous. Big pharma?? It is the opposite. How are MDs getting money from big pharma? It's more like "here is a packet on our new drug." They can't even give pens anymore.

ODs will never fall under the medical board. If the MDs had it their way, they would repel all the legislation that the ODs have worked so hard to get. ODs would be fools to allow the medical board to dictate their scope of practice. I can just imagine where ODs would be with regards to diagnostics and therapeutics if the medical board controlled their scope of practice.

It's not the 1980's. This does not happen. You watch too much TV.

I have always heard that 'it's not about the money' for Drs.
But, they all seem to drive fancy cars, live the high life, and make lots of money.
Seems like they would want better access and more opportunity for patients to get care, if that's what they were about. What about bad Optometrists? Malpractice will take care of that.
Why keep the Opthomology monopoly? B/c it's about the money.

Any word on if SB 568 passed the senate today or failed?

I think that they are debating if the check-out girl can administer anesthesia or not.

Seriously stupid question since I've never been to an eye dr. I can tell my vision is getting worse, would I just go to optometrist or do opthomalogist deal with that also?
Posted on 5/13/14 at 8:21 pm to windshieldman
For that you're better off with an optometrist. If you go to an ophthalmologist office for a routine eye exam, your probably going to see an optometrist anyway.
But as you can see in this thread there's plenty of overlap between the two that leads to disagreements in who should be doing what.

The answer to this depends on several things (age, medical problems, type of insurance, etc). If you're a healthy person with no medical problems, odds are you might just need some glasses. An optometrist would suit your needs just fine. Even if you have medical problems, going to an optometrist is fine. They're very good at examining the eye. If an optometrist tells you that you have any medical issue with your eyes at all, you should see an ophthalmologist going forward. Even though optometrists are able to treat some medical eye problems, they just don't have the expertise that ophthalmologists have to ensure you're getting the proper treatment.
