I get what you are saying, but it still doesn't mean they are right. It's like Tail of the Dragon. The road has become known by that because a guy named Ron ran a business at the overlook for a short time and then opened a booth across the street from DGMR which finally became a store that marketed his store's name as the nickname for the road. TotD is a store, the road was called just "the dragon."
Don't be that guy. It's how we separate locals from tourons.

I gotcha. I know it's officially part of the Blue Ridge but it's also common for that whole area up to above Gatlinburg to be called Smokies.

Well, since I actually live in north Alabama, strictly speaking I am a tourist when we come through there.
ETA: And speaking of being a tourist, me and some of the guys are riding to Lynchburg this Saturday to visit the Jack Daniels distillery. I'm pretty pumped because we're supposed to have good weather and that's some pretty country to ride through.

Helen was great until the early 90s when everything was centered around the Chatahoochee River in the oldest developed part of town. And yes....it is a river, not a creek. It is the size of a wide creek that far North because it is the headwater area.
Unfortunately, the planning committee of the city Government just kept approving more and more development south and away from the old town. It got cheesier by the year.
The restaurants pretty much suck though a couple of places have good breakfasts. Lunch and dinner options blow all around. Shopping is what you would expect given the typical tourist that visits Helen. A bunch of shops with different names but selling the same bull shite trinkets made in China. There are a few shops with local art and crafts for sale. There are more low rent people visiting Helen than you will find in PCB and that is saying a lot.
If you go....DO NOT get sucked into more than a two night stay. Two full days and one night will allow you to enjoy the novelty of the place. Anything longer than two nights will just give you bad memories.
If you like to hike a little, go to Anna Ruby Falls. It is an awesome waterfall and only 1 mile round trip hike. Ravens Cliff falls trail is longer in and out (6.4 miles I think) but also a scenic hike. Trout fishing around there is pretty good in Boggs Creek and Dukes Creek if you like that.
I would plan a week long trip that included a stop in Helen without staying there. I would get a cabin on Lake Chatuge in Hiawassee for two nights and day trip the hour to Helen. Spend evenings in Hiawassee/Young Harris area. Drive up and stay 2-3 nights at a B& B in Asheville. Visit Biltmore Estate. Last two nights in Waynesville, NC at The Yellow House Inn B&B.

Well shite. I thought they could give samples but not sell it. Main thing I want is a new JD shirt and maybe a bandanna.

You need to go spend a long weekend in Mentone, AL. It's still pretty much what Helen use to be 20 years ago.

depending on when you go, there are almost always festivals and fairs and such in Hiawassee...
the "creek" as our resident gator called it is actually the damned Chattahoochee RIVER...which flows southward to Atlanta and beyond...it's actually a good time tubing it in the summer if there has been plenty of rain...
if you want to fish for trout...plenty of places to do it....there is tons of shopping in Dahlonega if she is into that...
Helen is a nice place...it really depends on you...don't let these naysaying assholes talk you out of a decent getaway in N Ga....especially the fricking gator...

River vs Creek...
Well, you are right. It's still more creek than river depth up that far north and it's polluted with rednecks pissing in it. You yourself said you could tube on it "IF" there had been enough rain. It's a creek for all intents and purposes. Deal with it.
Everything I've stated was true. I had hot beer, bad food and saw lots of rednecks.
If you are mad about someone not liking your little slice of heaven I'd suggest finding other things to do. My opinion of Helen was shared by others in this thread.
I don't like tourist trap areas at all. I hate Orlando like no one else I know. Plenty of old ladies will love Helen for it's unique charm.
Anyway, I suggested a few things to do like Betty's and Hofer's. IMO, not much else to do that's worth a shite other than the natural sites you and others have mentioned.
I'm glad you are here to defend Helen, GA for those that might take an internet opinion too seriously.
