Papplesbeast is filling up the cheating thread with his open marriage. Since it spurred 5+ pages, I figured there's an interest in continuing the discussion

quote:

My wife and I don't have an open relationship, but we allow each other to have flings as long as certain criteria are met (family always comes first, time with spouse is prioritized over time with flings, no flings with existing friends or acquaintances, no falling in love, no pregnancy, no STDs). The general goal is achieving satisfaction while minimizing harm as much as possible and the criteria come from discussions we've had on the subject. We don't share details with each other. I guess you could call it "don't ask, don't tell" because, while we are in agreement rationally, emotions, particularly jealousy, aren't always rational.

We don't expect this to work perfectly all the time because there is no perfect solution, but it's working well enough so far for us. This is probably because, unlike most marriages these days, ours isn't based primarily on romance. Not that there isn't any romance, we just have many others reasons to be together besides infatuation and physical attraction (which inevitably fade). Anyway, what we are doing is certainly much better than suppressing desires or satisfying them in unhealthy ways (like porn addiction). It's also better than selfishly and stupidly hurting your spouse.

Imagine fancying yourself an expert on human sexuality and relationships while believing that romance equals infatuation and physical attraction.

This marriage won’t last.

Thank you...

Papplesbeast, if you read this give me an example of the type of flings that are acceptable. Do you two have to approve beforehand? Is kissing allowed? Is there a time limit on how long you can see the other person? I'm genuinely intrigued about this and just wonder how people do it.

I mean it's a hell of a lot better than the two of you cheating on each other and that shite happens all the time.

no falling in love

Even if you can set jealousy & everything else aside, this isn’t really feasible long term. Most people willing to hook up with a married person in his/her 40s are doing it because they’re bored & want some sort of excitement/connection. Flirting becomes more, and boom—there’s a connection. Then you start comparing your spouse to this person, and the other person makes you feel happier.

Between that & what you do when one spouse wants to stop and the other doesn’t, you might as well just get divorced. People get addicted to the attention. It isn’t sustainable.

I agree that love is more than physical attraction, but it seems that they've been married a while so maybe not all is lost? It is certainly better than actively cheating and lying to your spouse.

Absolutely not the lifestyle for me, but they seem to be making it work.

This sounds like maybe the real story is his wife is his beard and he likes other men.

The dumbest part of this is the no flings with existing friends and acquaintances, no falling in love and no STDs. If your only hookups meet the first few criteria it explodes the possibility of STDs.

Logically, it you accept homosexual marriage you must accept polygamy. There is even a feminist memo from the '90s that admits this.

The feminists don't care. Nothing matters except destroying the patriarchy.

I accept both - but neither is an option for my life and existing g lifestyle (hetero female in a monogamous marriage - I hope its monogamous at least)

Open marriage and polygamy are totally different.

I don't fault or judge either, but neither are my thing.

I'm sure there are many here that have open marriages, I know there are many swingers. Any polygamists?

You're totally right about them not being the same thing - I'm in a brain fog from medication.

Well, I'm glad they've set some boundaries.

And there's a part two to come that's going to be more detailed about Berchtold's manipulation and grooming.

My big question on the whole damn thing was Berchtold had his wife running interference but we were never told how.
