I'm looking at going back to get another Master's degree, and have been looking at some of the online programs available. I'd be looking at Software Engineering and have a list of about ten schools. The handful that stand out to me are Purdue, Texas Tech, Arizona State, and Penn State.

I'm hoping to hear from anyone with experience with the online programs at these schools, or recommendations for any others to take a look at.

I'm always weirded out by exclusively online programs. Getting help in person during office hours is honestly the only way I finished.

What's the actual difference in materiel between an undergrad and a master's degree? I understand if the master's is in another field(like an MBA), but if you say already have a degree in business, what do they expose you to that you didn't at least brush over in undergrad? Pardon my ignorance, but my buddy is getting his MBA(Engineer undergrad) and it was the same stuff I had taken a semester earlier.

I think that largely depends on the school. Penn State was pretty good. Some smaller ones that I have used, not so much.

I actually had looked into it, but they don't offer Software Engineering or anything similar that I'm aware of.

Master's degrees are usually for a particular specialty more than building on what you already know, or at least that's how I used it.

As a slight tangent; has anyone gotten an undergrad engineering degree online? I know Arizona State has a pretty good program.

I didn't get my undergrad online, but I have been doing a lot of research and Arizona State consistently comes up near the top in everything I've read for their online programs. They are probably 1 or 2 on my list right now. From what I understand, there is no difference in the curriculum between most of their traditional and online degrees.

Statistically speaking the student outcomes of online programs are no different than face to face programs. So when looking at online programs you should look at the same things as you would in face to face programs. Specifically, does the program fit what you want to accomplish? If you are looking at a masters program in programming, most of them would expect that you have computer science as an undergraduate degree or equivalent experience. Most masters program in programming try to get you deeper into more complex issues of programming. Think of college education as a funnel. The AS/BS level is to make you a generalist with a specialty. The masters is to make turn you from a generalist with a specialty to a master of one particular thing. The PHD is to make you an expert in one specific aspect of discipline.

I'm also looking at Texas Tech's software engineering online masters. They are the only one that I'm considering because the rest are expensive as hell.

I overlooked Maryland for some reason. Cost shouldn't be a problem. I have about 18 months of GI Bill left, and my company will pay the rest.

For some reason, I'm thinking tuition rates at ASU, Purdue, and Penn State were all similar to Texas Tech. Could be wrong though, I don't have my sweet spreadsheet in front of me.

Penn State, Kansas State, and Texas Tech are the top three.

Anyone have experience with the software engineering programs at those schools?
