Witchcraft? You people are…something. Do your kids get to trick or treat on Halloween?

Phones are now banned at every single school in Texas
Very based.

Per Grok:
quote:
As of June 2025, 26 states and Washington, D.C., have laws or policies banning or restricting cellphone use in K-12 schools, with 22 of these enacted in 2025. The states with active laws or executive orders banning or restricting cellphone use include:Alabama
Alaska
Arizona
Arkansas
California
Florida
Georgia
Indiana
Iowa
Kentucky
Louisiana
Minnesota
Nebraska
Nevada
New York
North Dakota
Ohio
Oklahoma
Rhode Island
South Carolina
Tennessee
Texas
Utah
Vermont
Virginia
West Virginia
Additionally, states like Illinois, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, North Carolina, and Wisconsin have legislation pending as of May 2025. Mississippi and Wyoming are the only states without any statewide cellphone policies in schools. Policies vary, with some states enforcing "bell-to-bell" bans (no phones throughout the school day), while others limit use during instructional time or require districts to set their own rules. Exceptions often include emergencies, medical needs, or educational purposes.

All the schools around here have bell to bell bans on all smart devices, including watches and Kindles.

quote:hmmm - im not sure if smartphones help more with socialization more than they hurt
i would say the phones help more than they hurt.
Good things may have come from it, but many bad things too
quote:kids need to stay away from bad socialization- just like when mom told us to stay away from the troublemakers before smartphones existed but I think a kid would be ok without internet before college - they have time to catch up once they leave high school and enter college - it’s a learning curve for sure but I haven’t seen a kid that wasn’t exposed not be able to catch on quickly
saying kids need to socialize less and not have internet access until college is dumb as frick and puts the kid way way behind
quote:many, many homeschoolers school without internet - the homeschool program we use even has an option if you want to be technology free
not to mention not even possible since homework is almost exclusively on the internet through the portals now.
quote:lol - there are plenty of anti social people everywhere
yea because anti social people send their kids their.
quote:hmmm, don’t necessarily agree with this either -kids have way too many choices nowadays and parents need to be parents
so many of yall are setting your kids up for failure being rigid AF.

They are completely banned from campus at my kid's school.

Smartphones have obviously killed socialization, to say otherwise is completely absurd. I’m not sure how anybody could possibly believe otherwise.

quote:it’s killed it the way we knew it -it’s a different type of socialization now
Smartphones have obviously killed socialization,
Different doesn’t necessarily mean better or worse.
But so many kids cannot converse - there’s no way smartphones are better for society. Sure it makes things convenient, but at what cost?

One thing that hasn't come up that I would be curious to learn your opinion on generally for those of us planning for when our tiny kids get older....different restrictions for girls vs. boys? Seems like social media does more harm than good for girls in particular. Worst combo for this is girl with addictive personality. How do we safeguard phones without being too restrictive when it comes to this kind of case? I guess I am not familiar enough with the controls that are out there for parents. I always assumed kids would find a way around parental controls. Very curious about this.
i dont have girls, i have 3 boys but I will say the biggest thing i have seen with the girls is they need to have time away from social settings too and that very much includes the phone.
you have to watch depression in both boys and girls, but i have seen girls hole up and obsess over things on the phones and also seen where they are getting bullied and cant seem to get away from it due to the phone
I do feel like sports helps and especially lifting weights for both because it helps with confidence
but, and speaking as an outside observer, girls seem to be much more susceptible to societal pressure especially on social media
in the end the key is communication and spending time with them. talking everyday is key.
like my oldest can be a huge pain in the arse to get stuff out of, so sometimes I go play NCAA with him, just me and him and we talk or we talk when he is lifting weights in the garage. that seems to work with him
the other boys are open books
and my oldest will talk your head off on things outside of his personal life or school stuff, he just gets shy when it comes to that kind of stuff.

Cool.
That was more in response to 777, who claims that you have to allow your kids to have phones at school because their coach is going to want to groupme them to change their practice schedule.
I wouldn't want a coach sending "texts" to my kid regardless, but I guess it's different and you care about that stuff less if you have boys.

7th grader have phones and even have Instagram (i know crazy)
Or even the 9th grader?
They post about themselves?

I am pretty anti social media in general (meaning Facebook and Instagram). I deleted mine 5 years ago and never looked back. But if the goal were moderation, how could it be done? The goal is raising kids with good values and habits without ostracizing them from their peers or creating a situation where they go crazy overboard on all this stuff when they get to college and suddenly find themselves free with no restrictions. I get this guy's point that it shouldn't be all or nothing but have real concerns about addiction when these devices and programs are designed TO addict kids.
so kids dont want facebook they want insta, tictok and snap
frick snap...dont let them have that shite, quick way to get into all kinds of shite and being bullied
tictok...man i have seen some shite. if you kid does get it, i would say no posting and frankly i wouldnt do it. rather my kid watch youtube shorts to be honest.
instagram depends on the kid and all post need to be monitored. it can be done but can get them in trouble too....monitor messages including deleted messages
honestly my kids watch a lot of youtube fishing videos and the youngest likes to watch baseball card unboxing and they do that a lot on the main living room tv.

I was in about 9th grade when Instagram came out. Deleted it when I graduated high school. Best thing i ever did.
Apparently it is just a place to post memes now.

I guess it's different and you care about that stuff less if you have boys.
Including coaches but sports is king so who cares if Coach Toby is asking Jaxxtynnn about his sore muscles at 2AM - it’s on GroupMe! Nothing wrong with that!

Text, email for variable schedules. For the sports with daily practice (wrestling/jujitsu) they just tell them and expect them to remember if something changes. Wild I know.
