And have argued about who actually did it ever since. Hats off to them though. That place was hell on earth for a few days. My mom's adoptive father was there, never heard him speak a word about it.

Says a guy who obviously doesn’t read.

They were clueless about what they were getting into and once there had no choice.

Not arguing the piss and vinegar part. True. But with what we know today you’d be pissing your pants before you left San Diego.

What are the odds that everyone in this thread would have a familial tie to those guys

They are brothers from the past. My tie would be myself, my father, and his mom and dad all being Marines.

I had a great-uncle who landed on Iwo on the fifth day of the battle. He spent a grand total of ten hours in combat in his Marine Corps career. A Jap grenade shredded up his leg pretty good, and he was evacuated off the island. He later told me it was the best thing that could have happened to him; he got to spend the final months of the war slapping pretty nurses on the butt in Guam and Hawaii.

An old Marine Corps Sergeant Major I used to work with told me if every Marine who claimed to have been on that mountain during the flag raising had actually been there, the island would have tipped over.

Hey, my mom (no pics but think Hedy Lamarr) was a Navy nurse.

You owe me reparations!
