On this day in 1945, the U.S. Marines landed on the island of Iwo Jima...

And marched into a whirlwind of death and destruction, as the Japanese - after holding their fire for many minutes - suddenly opened up on the beaches where U.S. Marine and Navy personnel were steadily moving ashore. February 19, 1945, was the first day of a five-week long battle that would cost the lives of nearly 7,000 Americans and 19,000 Japanese. Total casualties for the battle itself approached 50,000 - all for an island that was quite literally just a speck on the map.

And one they ultimately didn’t even need.

Combat correspondent Sergeant Mawson, embedded with the 4th Marine Division, delivered a live report from the island on February 27, 1945 as the Marines advanced on Motoyama Airfield.

I disagree, as Ian W. Toll pointed out in his recent book:

quote:

B-29s from the Twentieth Air Force would make 2,251 emergency landings on Iwo Jima. Possession of the vital way station, almost directly on the flight line between the Marianas and Japan, effectively added to the range and payload of the Superforts. It also saved untold numbers of lives. In April, P-51 squadrons based on Iwo would begin providing fighter escort for the B-29 formations as they hit Japan. Approximately 20,000 USAAF aircrewmen made at lest one emergency landing on the island; many would have otherwise perished at sea. A B-29 pilot spoke for all of his fellow airmen when he said, "Whenever I land on this island I thank God for the men who fought for it."

John Basilone on Iwo Jima

quote:

Enemy fire from heavily fortified bunkers was murderous, and everyone was pinned down in the black volcanic sand on the beach. Basilone, recognizing that his men would survive only if they kept moving, yelled at them to “Get off the beach!” Then, shrewdly gauging the tactical situation, he worked his way around the flank, singlehandedly attacking and destroying a Japanese blockhouse with grenades and demolitions, which allowed his unit to capture a nearby airfield.

A short time later, Basilone helped a Marine tank that had become trapped in an enemy minefield and was in danger of being destroyed by mortar and artillery fire. Despite the rain of exploding shells all around him, Basilone managed to guide the tank to safety. But then his luck ran out. Just minutes later, while moving along the edge of an airfield, shrapnel from an exploding mortar shell grievously wounded him. “Manila John” Basilone died about 30 minutes later. He was 27 years old.

The emergency landings number is highly contested. According to several historians, the majority of B-29 landings there were routine refueling stops.

Where would they have refueled if not at Iwo Jima?

My dad was on the second wave and he stayed for the duration. He was promoted to master sgt a week after landing.(I found this from his military records after he died.)

All he would ever talk about was how badly he wanted a glass of ice water.

My father was with the 5th Marine Division that land on Iwo. He was wounded on Iwo. He did not talk much about the battle but he did say he saw the American flag being raised on Mt. Kuribayashi.

Watching, reading, and listening about this stuff just makes me feel like a petty a-hole. I get burned out from working an accounting job while men back then had to way the moral choice of killing a disobedient prisoner or running up a hill towards an automatic weapon spewing death.
