Honestly, this is pretty interesting and disturbing. If ole miss isn't producing the same quality that can be found on the private (or black) market then they might not be producing the best test results for medical marijuana or other research purposes. This could severely hold back the possible benefits found in various strains of the drug.

Sounds exactly like buds not being dry enough before going into cure. The hay smell is entirely seperate from what you're describing, which is mold. Long story short, if you're drying in a room without humidity control... you're asking for this. Small hygrometers for your curing jars, i use 5 gallon buckets personally lol, are absolutely priceless... and relatively inexpensive.

I try, obviously I'm passionate about the subject. Depending on where you live we all face varying degrees of irregularities in this process. Where you live is much drier than where i am in florida. You may be fighting drying too quickly, which actually leads to the dreaded hay smell. My people in nor cal get shite tons of rain at the end of the outdoor season, so they're fighting mold bad... mold spores are present before the drying/curing, so you're f'ed when it hits you.
Long story short, over 5-7 days you're trying to slowly work down to a relative humidity of ~65%. No curing should start until there. Around 62% is the desired finish number. That colorado dispensary stuff is always drier than this, not complainig btw, so i bring a bovada humidity packet (mini humidor type thing) designed for us... and of course a mason jar.
