That would explain it. I'm still confused as to how this girl kept going around this dude if he had been abusing her for over a year, at minimum. Why was this girl anywhere near him?

Damn this is sad all the way around. Looks like the dude had a mental break (if it happens it usually happens in one's early 20s).
Girlfriends say he bothered her for years. Was this a "if I can't have you no one will" type of thing? Or was it "I will eliminate you because I don't want to be tied to you and the baby?"
Doesn't seem like it can be both.

Man, this is incredibly common. Women feel trapped and/or become manipulated. Often time get convinced they deserve it or it’s their fault. Kind of amazing you’ve never heard of this.

I'm not saying this doesnt happen and I understand there are those situations, but this seems above and beyond a typical woman beater.

Yeah, ive seen it too many times. It gets nasty.
My ex gf has been sending me alarming messages about her current bf lately, and I'm not sure what to do. Obviously I don't want to get involved in any way, but I have this dread that something really will happen to her and I will have been aware that something bad was happening. Kind of a shitty situation.

Well, if he's a pyscho, then it can be both and none and something else entirely.
If he ran, he's not psycho. He knows what he did and he will probably make a deal so it's not death penalty.
