GBALL TOURNAMENT

This was the 1980 BolwingBall Tournament, in which contenders would pass bowling balls to their partners on the deck below.

As you might imagine, it was a one time event.

A little more info....I remember going to the stadium as a kid and seeing a sign reading "Green Backers" entrance over one of the entrance lanes.
The Tournaments that they had were more alumni booster-type tourneys- golf, billiards and poker. Just excuses to get together, drink and have fun. Without knowing for sure, this room may have been their tourney room, with beer on tap for game day.

Greenbackers is still a Tulane booster group. They meet Sportsbeat in Metairie on Thursday nights.

All I know about old Tulane Stadium is that my parents attended Super Bowl IV there.

Spoog bowl?

Nah, just kidding. I think that is a "G", not an S and it is "rugby tournament"

I learned about the 1970 Soul Bowl at Tulane Stadium because of this thread. Wild.

I was going to post something the other day in your first string, but I thought it might’ve been getting too much into the weeds. But since you brought this up....

One of the things I remember as a kid about walking into Tulane stadium is how they used to put (“store“) things underneath the stands. The one thing that always fascinated me as a kid was seeing the stencils for the playing field numbers underneath the stands.

I always entered the stadium from Claiborne Street by the married student housing building. I always went in by the side closest to Audubon Boulevard. I remember seeing those stencils (that they would use to paint the numbers on the field with) just sitting right underneath the stands.

I I always thought it would be so easy to steal those as they were just laying there. I really wanted one.

One of the things that fascinated me about those stencils (and the field markers themselves) was the font of the numbers. They used those “point“” numbers. As you were sitting in the stands, the numbers didn’t look big. But the stencils seemed huge - at least to a little kid.

This is what I mean by the stencil fonts...

My dad went to that one. He said he just went to the box office and bought regular face value tickets back then before the SB blew up into this huge event.

The arrow on the field numbers came with the advent of TV. It was a way for the TV viewer to see which side of the field the ball was at a glance.

Literally, just right under the stands. I couldn’t tell you what section other than the side closest to Audubon Boulevard. It was probably just convenient for them to put them there right after they got finished marking the field.

my girlfriend from LSU is an attorney and when she passed the bar in '79 she had to go to some meeting at Tulane and there was a big party afterward, I had to drive over from Lafayette to meet up with her and their meeting was in a building right by the old stadium and they were in the stages of preparing to tear it down, there was an opening big enough to drive through and from what I could see there was absolutely no one in the stadium, I drove my('77 Cutlass ) out on to the field, did a couple of laps, and finished off my tour with a couple of donuts on the fifty yard line

Im guessing they already removed the turf by then. They probably were opening up the fences to get equipment in there.
