I think by modern standards she is horrific.
I really like some EDM and other electronic spinoff genres. I also like some pop like Adele, some Coldplay, etc.
And I think Katy Perry is an abomination. I am so far from picky when it comes to music and I can't listen to that shite. Same with most pop country like Florida-Georgia Line (which might be a better example of how stupid the masses are).
And for the record, I'm a bluegrass fan probably the most, but old rock is always on my playlist i.e. Zeppelin and Queen.

I'm not sure what can come after today's music. Following on the decline of the movie star, probably rappers will fade away then it will be only DJs, and finally DJs will disappear too. At that point it will just be an electronic drone where the audience itself is the show.

Rappers are already turning into hybrid-DJs.

This is without a doubt one of the most incorrect statements I see made on a regular basis.
There is a huge amount of great new music being made. You just won't find it on any of the local stations besides KLSU.

As am I. I also try not to get swayed by the "anti-mainstream" movement that you see from some music snobs. Sometimes Taylor Swift (or insert any other major artist) may have a song that I like, and there is nothing wrong with that. I can't stand people who feel the need to shite on ALL popular music just to be cool, because plenty of that indie shite sucks too. I'll listen to and enjoy basically anything other than heavy metal stuff or classical music.
All that being said, and my affinity for older music aside, the inferring anything about older music vs. newer music is futile based on the article in the OP.

people still buy albums?
Yes. Some of us still think stealing is wrong and are willing to support the artist we like.

Not sure, but much of the popular stuff today is just a rebrand of the same shite that has worked for years. I mean there is plenty of shite out there if you look for it, but someone like Bruno Mars is just a 2010 spin on Michael Jackson, and there is nothing wrong with that IMO.

There were 65.8MM physical current albums sold vs. 52.5 digital albums sold. I would have never guessed physical albums outpaced digital albums, much less by 30%.

Again, someone's opinion on how good or bad music is or was cannot be right or wrong. It's an opinion. And no matter how much it bothers young people today, people in the real world will have their own opinion on matters and chances are their opinion won't mesh up with yours. Deal with it.

The biggest factor is the music industry is so fractured and delivered in such a "narrow-cast" way that almost no one stands out in the rock world. The reason bands seem "bigger and better" in our memory is everyone listened to it over the air and then ran out to buy the albums. FM stations around the country all played the big groups (Stones, Zep, Skynyrd, etc) so there was a feeling of community in the rock world. We all thought Stairway to Heaven or Honky Tonk Woman was great because AOR stations around the country played them.
Now, via streaming services and the interwebs, you may be the only one that listens to that indy group out of Paducah or the rockabilly reggae group from Des Moines. No one else has heard of them. Doesn't mean theyre shite, but tastes can be served on such a narrow front now that nobody seems to be a "voice of a generation ".

I sometimes buy albums a few years once they released out of laziness. I am sure I am not alone.
But the vast majority of new music... specifically in the POP category is "mindless tripe"

Or wants to be
I like a ton of what you said and agree with it. Clearchannel is the real problem when it comes to FM stations playing five songs over and over and over and over.

When I find an album I really want to buy these days I typically buy the vinyl from Amazon, then I also get the digital download for no extra cost. It might be a little more expensive, but I can get both formats for not a lot more money... and that gets recorded as a physical album sold.

Yep. It's proof that Darth doesn't understand how to read an article objectively. Maybe he's hit his head too many times after falling off his bike.
Hey Darth, I have proof that rap music is the best. It's just my opinion, man...

New rock and country especially. Christ, what they've done to those genres is sinful.
Posted on 4/28/16 at 3:01 pm to JohnZeroQ
I admit, I like the music from my youth (rock in the 90s was abysmal, IMO) and am too lazy to go narrow searching for good contemporary bands. There's enough "inventory" of classic rock to keep me entertained. I'm past the point in my life where I'm trying to impress others by being the first to discover "Rancid Turpentine", the latest hot band out of Seattle/Austin/Detroit (wherever the latest breeding ground for happening music is coming from).

Chris Stapleton and Sturgill Simpson are bringing country back.
It is alarming however that Florida Georgia Line sells out arenas. They should only allow 18+ people into one of those shows and chemically castrate them through the concession stands.
