Wow. Not sure how to respond to such stupidity. Did you apply the same logic when oil prices were high and the economy was in shambles? Price of oil was around $100 from 2011 to 2014. How about when oil was super cheap in the 90's and the economy was going like gangbusters?
You realize that there's a lot more going on in the world besides the oil exploration and extraction industry, right?

Got laid off two months ago... Still haven't found a (permanent) job yet...
Its starting to rip apart my life actually... There's just so many people looking for so few jobs

So you're admitting that it's not as simple as people saving x amoubt of dollars on gas? Glad you agree.

Yeah, CAT is way down and that should hit us soon as well. But, the majority of our losses this year are due to the O&G downturn.

No. Its pretty simple. It's dolts like you who believe it is for the greater good to have people pay x amount of dollars more for gas.
I've provided math that shows the consumer pays $140b more at the pump when gas prices are $1 more. This means that you could simply put a $0.50/gallon tax on the gas and consumers would still save money, but you'd have $70b to give to all the unemployed and under-employed people who lost jobs in the O&G industry.
With $70b you could give 460,000 people $150k/yr. How is that not better?

Why would I want to give them money, I prefer to save on gas prices. I'm not related nor am I one, so I don't care.

I hope everything turns out well for you. Hang in there.
I am taking a few years off from a major EPC OG&C company that is doing a lot of work in LNG around the globe. There are many jobs to be had for skilled craft and engineers even now in LA and TX.

Maybe in your immediate surroundings, I get that. But isn't it a bit selfish to ignore the positive effect it's having on everyone else? I'm just saying, maybe it everyone looked at the effect it has on the entire country, instead of just themselves, it might open up eyes.
I'm not dependent on O&G but we do take a hit when it's down, it shrinks our customer base, and I'm not just talking about my immediate area I was referring to the entire Gulf Coast region, well most of it anyway. Yes I know it doesn't affect the whole country but it does affect a large portion of it and that's enough to be concerned about. I get the vitriol for the oilfield workers but not all of those guys are douchebags many of them are hard working people who work in a volatile industry but they are needed. It sucks when they lose their jobs, and it hurts the wages of other trades because there is now a glut of job seekers out there and wages fall due to supply and demand. Fuel costs are down but I don't see prices on goods falling and like I said I remember the 80's and how little work there was out there in all types of trades, professions etc.

You're a public school teacher? I can't think of how it would really affect you outside of maybe some cutbacks in school budgets.
I have tried to tell people on here before that even though I live in SLA this will have zero impact on me or any of my family but they insist that I am ignorant. I know what my family does for a living and I know what I do. I can't think of any scenario where it would hurt any of us.

With all the work going on from Sabine Pass to LC I don't see any blip on the radar for anyone in your area as far as layoffs. Like I said, even if someone is laid off from an oil related job there are many more LNG jobs.

You're being overly simplistic

Yea I figure a lot of the O&G guys will come here to fill the LNG labor needs.

But for the VAST majority of the country, isn't cheaper gas a positive effect? Cost of doing business goes down, prices go down, people have more discretionary cash, jobs created, etc. etc. etc.?
Seems like it to me. I don't really see how this whole scenario negatively affects me in New york even though I do feel for guys hurting in that area of the country.

Thanks. The scary part, for me at least, is that I'm only about a year out of college with $88k left to pay on student loans.

Everything feels like it's falling apart... My home life, my engagement, my savings account, my sanity....
I refused to file for unemployment bc I thought I'd land right back on my feet.... NOPE, didn't happen

I don't feel like going into detail, but energy was the biggest driver of growth for our economy coming out the recession. The net effect isn't all that clear. There will certainly be a lot of negative effects on other industries-- banking, railroads, steel, etc.
Posted on 9/24/15 at 10:16 pm to stout
The thing is I have offered to help people looking on here and gave my email to forward along to my connections and have only gotten a few and have gotten them long term jobs.
I don't know if some don't understand that construction is construction and engineering is engineering no matter what the final product. shite the work in Sabine Pass we have is scheduled to last till 2020.
