Aren't you an operator? Y'all don't have a used oil bin at work?
Posted on 1/21/17 at 12:09 pm to Teauxler
GM's 2015 5.3L engine holds 8 quarts of oil.
This contributes to the expense.
Any retailer (Walmart, all auto parts stores, etc.) which sells oil is legally obliged to provide waste oil disposal to their clientele.

Your Suburban takes 8.5 quarts of synthetic so they can be pretty high to change, but I think I paid around 90 from a dealership last time I had mine changed

Never asked and never heard of bringing spent oil to work.
Not sure if it isn't considered hazardous waste honestly.
Don't come near used oil containers in my day to day.

They even give you a coke on top of checking tire pressure and top off washer fluid.

We have a huge bin that we put spent oil in (from the pumps). We all dump our spent oil there.
As a side note, believe it or not, oil is not considered "hazardous waste" as long as it has not come in contact with process chemicals. We put spent oil pads in the non hazardous waste Dak Packs and that's acceptable by the EPA. When I say non hazardous, that means it can be incinerated.

Or sumps.
But we aren't talking about process oil. This is synthetic oils with detergents. Again, I have no idea the classification though, just pondering.
I could bring it in I guess. But, I still have the part of containers, transport....
I'll just work an hour of OT and cover the oil change.

Did mine myself last weekend for <$40 with full synthetic oil.

If it's do-ityourself.
10 qts. of Mobil 1 synthetic is about $60 (Walmart) and a Wix filter is about $8, so $120 is high.
Closer to $100 seems more reasonable.
I'd call an oil change place because they can quote immediately because Suburbans aren't scarce.

Where are you getting this information? Not accurate.
A retailer is not responsible for disposal of waste oil.
Search this site for disposal facilities in your area: LINK

So on a $50k investment your worried about saving $30 or so? You do it maybe twice per year. Just get it done and quit posting about something so irrelevant. There are literally 50 places to go in every town. Shop around you millennial bitch.

GM has reduced the oil amount to 8 quarts for the new 5.3L.

Really ???
I save where I can. It allows me to make $50k investments.

I always use milk jugs for old oil.
Places like Auto Zone have a recycle program, which entails of a big metal container in the back of the store.

Go to one of those 5 minute oil changes. About half the price
A lot of those places can't do tire rotations.

I changed the oil in the wife's 15 Tahoe last week. Materials were <$50. The placement of the oil filter makes a mess when removing it. Also, f gm for having a 15mm hex plug. All in all, not that hard of a job.

Seems right to me assuming change interval is 8,000 to 10,000 miles.
Depending on the motor, that's anywhere from 6 to 8 qts synthetic + filter + at minimum, 30/45 minutes of labor at around $50/hour.
My fiancé's Jetta is $100 for an oil change. Sounds expensive, but with the increase in change intervals across the industry, you're really getting two changes for the price of one.

This (purchase at Walmart):
Makes it easy. Hardest part of an oil change for me is a mess free filter swap. You can dispose of the oil at any auto parts store or mechanic shop.

I do 5-6 quarts of synthetic. $60-75
Posted on 1/21/17 at 3:34 pm to Teauxler
My dealership changes my oil in a 2016 Silverado for around $80. And that's 100% synthetic.
Call a dealership.
