Ohio Man (parent) Headbutts Ref During A 5th Grade GIrl's Basketball Game

In the video posted by WHIO, the referee, Doug Thompson, walks over to the bleachers and speaks to fans. The man, who has not been identified by authorities, then walks onto the court and headbutts the referee. As Thompson fights back, other members of the crowd jump in to break up the altercation.
Speaking to WHIO, Thompson said the encounter took place during the second half of the girls' game when he asked the man to leave the gym during a timeout after cursing and yelling at Thompson over calls made during the contest.

There's never any excuse for an adult to come out of the stands and do this, but seems like the ref wasn't exactly trying to de-escalate the situation. From the article:
I dunno. Maybe I'm overreading this but it seems like he walked up to the crowd and says, "Is there a problem here?" Of course this will instigate the crowd further.
Again, no excuse for the douche to come out of the stands but a referee has to understand mob mentality better.

Ok so I agree with this 100%. However, most facilities don’t even have someone watching. They make parents do the book and clock. Then these whack jobs go nuts and the refs are human. Also, it doesn’t pay much so unless the ref is a retired person then you get what you get
