Sorry about the slow response. I went for ATV riding and just got back. That's good to know that companies value military experience and training. And I'm willing to learn anything they want to teach me. So here's to hoping it all works out.

Thanks for the well wishes and it was fun doing my Army time.

I used to run filtration systems for clear brine completion fluids. Does anybody have an idea of what this pays today and who the players are?

I'm late to the thread as I've been offshore for the past few days. They're planning on having upwards of 60 deepwater rigs by the end of the year so I hear. You go to transocean, seadrill, etc. or basically any O&G service company and they will be hiring. Offshore work isn't for everyone but its good money and decent time off. You can work half a year and make some bank. Tough work when you're out there but I think it's worth it.

I didn't mind being offshore too much (so long as it was a nice rig). The thing that began to grind on me was the hassle of getting out there and back.

Do most MWD jobs have a schedule

Nope. As we speak I've had one day off since the 14th of December and if your location slows they pretty much tell you to pack up or quit. Hence why I am living overseas now.

To save money away? Very, very few. People usually can either hack it and stay for the long term or they can't hack it, bail, and never come back.

Do MWD hand work by a day rate? What's the going rate?

Yes and tool bonus. Depends on the company and grade for the value though. It can honestly be anywhere from $110-$225 starting and up to $500 later on. Factor in high temp bonus and other things and I know someone who made $15k in two weeks.

You really have no idea man. All the MWDs I work with are either ex-military or straight from college grads. Nothing else.

I'm oil terminology ignorant. What is MWD? Coming from an Army background, that's Military Working Dog to me.

Also, does anyone have any insight on the work schedule for a field and shop Electronic Technicians for Schlumberger? I think the job I'm being interviewed for is a shop based ET. I'm just trying to figure out if it is a Mon-Fri thing or if it's so many days on so many off.

Measurements while drilling (or movie watching dudes to the rig hands). Basically you bust arse to get your sensors up and your tool programmed, but once it's below rotary if it's working it's not a lot of work.

Which segment? My friend works D&M in the shop in Youngsville. Lots of OT right now with some Saturdays thrown in. Shop life style depends on field demand. Lots of demand=lots of overtime and occasional weekends. If demand drops you might actually go on loan to another country.

Almost all shop jobs are regular Mon.-Fri. jobs, while fields hands are usually 24 hr. call or 7/7 or 14/14. Field hands usually make more because you're paid a higher day rate or if hourly, you make alot of hours while you're gone and most of it will be overtime. Some companies pay 12 hrs. a day, some 21, and some 24 hrs.

I'm interviewing for a slot in Youngsville. I was wondering about the shift work to see if I would have to move there for a m-f thing or if I could stay in my house now and just drive down for a rotation stint. Looks like I'd be moving if I got the job.

Yeah, most likely you'll have to move. I don't think they do shift work. You'll like Lafayette, much, much better than Leesville.

They'll want you to move to the area even if you work offshore on shift work.

I just asked me friend about it, I'll let you know exactly what he says

ETA: You'll also have to go to some training schools in Sugar Land, TX or in Siberia or in Abu Dhabi at some point.

Also most of the shop guys I interacted with were pretty good guys. You'll probably get fed up with the MWDs though trying to get their shop training in

I imagine it's a hell of slot nicer than Leesville. Almost everything is. The only reasons I didn't want to move was because I just bought house here last summer and I'm not keen on the idea of being in a new city by myself again. But I've done it before, I can do it again.

My best friend had his 6 week cementing class in Tyumen in the middle of the winter. Would not wish that hellhole on anyone.
