So by that info graphic it could be in 26 countries, but only 25 are looking for the plane. Seems almost too easy why that country isn't looking.

Doesn't stand for anything - just part of the (sorry - edited) IATA airline code

The code for Malaysia Airlines is "MH".

Correct - and the more obvious sounding choices like 'MA' and 'ML' were taken by Malév Hungarian Airlines and Midway Airlines.

this may be a stupid question, but what's the purpose of the black box anyway??

we have high speed internet access, can't all the telemetry, etc. from an airplane be stored in a cloud? the idea of a black box on the airplane containing all the relevant data seems..well...'quaint'.

it doesnt make sense to me this black box is the best way to keep all this data when you got a $30 million dollar airplane, how much could it cost to store the data remotely instead of buried in a box on an airplane that might be spiraling down in flames?

I really think cloud storage will be implemented or at least brought up to be implemented in five years. Makes too much sense.

Would you also agree that some people in this thread got very excited at the possibility of the plane being in the middle east or somewhere in Muslim land with the idea of it being loaded with explosives or some shite?

I don't think excited is the right word. People (myself included) like mysteries.

Well if the fuselage is in pieces I don't think it would float.

I was expecting them to find the stabilizer or a piece of the wing. Carbon Fiber pieces float most of the time.

The reasoning is that if some entity in another country saw maximum resolution Digital Globe was capable of imaging they would assume our military/intelligence gathering organizations had the same or better capabilities, and they would prefer that remain undisclosed, so I have been told!

For fricks sake, Google maps can zoom in and see down to what type of shoes someone is wearing.

Have you seen the new google maps with the 3-d rendering?

My image is clear. I can make out my cars in the back driveway, and that I was moving stuff on a trailer in the back.
Pretty clear.

Saw something on a satellite image. Sent planes out to find it and couldn't.

I think the world already knows they could do a lot better than what they released so far.

of the 26 it could be in, there are more than one not helping. As the US is helping and it can't be here.

But far from real-time. I think the gov't doesn't want recent hi-res satellite images out there.

i think they definitely want time to look for anything that may be security sensitive.

I never tried but can you zoom in on Nuclear Power plants?
