I don't know what to think anymore. Still leaning to this thing being shot down.
I am convinced after watching this shite show that the TSA is going to start recruiting for new employees in Malaysia. Not sure which group is more incompetent, TSA or Malaysians.

No one is more incompetent than the TSA. It's sad but true.

Meh. With the relative instability in the region I guess it's possible. We'll never know until they recover the black boxes though.
With the relatively shallow water in the region, it shouldn't be that complicated to find the flight if it crashed in the water though.
That's the most weird aspect of this fight if it just had a catastrophic incident.
Who knows at this point.

true, it's only around 200 feet deep, right?

In the area that they initially thought it had crashed in, yes.
Any area in the region is relatively shallow when compared to the area that the AF447 flight crashed into though.

To aid maintenance, most airlines use the Aircraft Communications Addressing and Reporting System (ACARS), which automatically collates and files four technical reports during every flight so that engineers can spot problems. These reports are sent via VHF radio or satellite at take-off, during the climb, at some point while cruising, and on landing.
The Rolls Royce monitoring system uses ACARS.

Aeronautical operational control and airline administrative control messages are used to communicate between the aircraft and its base. These messages are either standardized according to ARINC Standard 633 or defined by the users, but in the latter case they must meet at least the guidelines of ARINC Standard 618. Various types of messages are possible, for example, relating to fuel consumption, engine performance data, aircraft position, in addition to free text.

ACARS information helped tremendously in understanding the Air France 447 crash.

I'm sticking with scenario one in this one from the OP. Only plausible thing in my mind. Other ideas are too extreme, no military is dumb enough to shoot down a civilian airliner. And if it was self defense bc of terrorists flying the plane, they would admit bc America would be running to their aid.

It's happened several times. Hell, ours did it once.

It would be difficult to land in a populated area with a real airport and conceal identity. Some jungle strip long enough to land a 777, if there is such a thing...maybe. I'll be shocked if it ever touched ground intact.
The landing distance charts in the POH for the 777 indicates that it could be put down on a 5000 ft strip at sea level assuming most of the fuel had been used. Just more trivia, not suggesting this actually happened.

True. I can't deny its happened before, but the last time it happened by a competent nation was us back in the 80's. The recent ones have been from extreme nations.
I met a lot of Malaysian fighter pilots last time I was in Singapore and they all seem fairly competent and decent people. I can't say it didn't happen, but I don't think think it did.
If they did get shot down, It wasn't from Malaysian military IMO.

That Wall Street Journal article raises some scary propositions. This mess is truly stranger than fiction.

Doesn't Korea have an airline? Would think he could just commandeer one of those planes if he just wanted a long range bomber type weapon. That way don't have everyone searching And possibly pissed if they found out

Let's consider what it would take to take this plane somewhere else for whatever nefarious use might be planned for it. You'd need somewhere to land, obviously. You'd need fuel, a lot of it. You'd need someone who can do maintenance, and the longer it sits, the more maintenance it will need. You'll need equipment on the ground-a tractor for towing, a compressor to start the engines, etc, etc.
And you'll need all this in a location away from prying eyes, both in the ground and in air/space.
I just don't think it's practical. This thing is in pieces underwater somewhere.

Oh that's without question the first logical thought. But lets say the plane is landed somewhere...then what?
Maybe something like was being discussed way back in '62 with the Op-Northwoods airline thing ...but who knows.

What's most interesting about this new revelation is that the plane flew for only 5 total hours rather than the possible 7 hours it carried enough fuel for.
Why would someone hijack a flight only to crash it after 5 hours?
Unconscious crew & passengers due to sudden decompression.

Press conference at 5:30 PM Local time
Reports of transmissions of data from engines (Rolls Royce) and Boeing are false.
No debris has been found in the area of the satellite photo provided by China.
Malaysia is giving raw data from military out in lieu of national security which caused the search to proceed to the Straits of Malaca. FAA and US NTSB agreed with decision to suspect that it was a remote possibility the flight crossed into the Straits.
Despite reports of searches of the homes of the pilots and crew it did not happen.
Tomorrow a technical briefing will be held to explain all of the equipment that is being used and the capabilities.
43 ships 40 planes involved in the search.

I liked the one about the Malaysian witch doctors being consulted. Who knows whether it's true.
