Is this the same guy that Elon said he didn't trust to be in charge of AI governance?
It was already a bad look that people like Elon gave him money to create an OPEN SOURCE AI and they named it "OPEN" AI, and then as soon as they got something operational they turned into a very CLOSED for-profit company. Microsoft will be worse, but frick that guy anyway.

Microsoft has shown that they can be mediocre but consistent for long periods of time. I don’t expect them to do anything significant with AI in the grand scheme of things.

HA
I was hoping we'd see Sam Altman start a new AI company and steal a bunch of Open AI folks.
I despise the safety AI people. It's just a pursuit of control. It's still going to carry the same risks/danger only they want to be the gatekeepers on what is "good". Power always corrupts.

Are we ever going to know exactly why he was fired in the first place?

It boils down to a safety ism faction vs accelerationist faction.
Sam Altman is an accelerationist, the Ilya Sutskever faction is the safetyism faction (which includes Joseph Gordon-Levitt's wife).

Might even be a net benefit in the end with the accelerationist faction getting the safetyism faction either axed from the company or having a much reduced role.

It is, Ilya either miscalculated his ability to pull this off, or something made him feel he had to try anyway. There's a lot of people that think recent statements and rumors of internal tension, leading up to this coup, revolve around the company achieving AGI internally. Microsoft's deal excludes models that are declared AGI by the full board. Ilya thought he would get to keep the Microsoft money and build the AGI his way is the theory.
That is a bit of a conspiracy theory, but it also seems to fit some as a reasonable explanation of the why of coup when coupled with a recent statement by Altman:
quote:
‘On a personal note, like four times now in the history of OpenAI, the most recent time was just in the last couple of weeks, I’ve gotten to be in the room when we pushed the veil of ignorance back’
And Ilya not tweeting much recently after doing so nearly daily up until October.
This fight was clearly over control of the company, the question is, were they fighting over perhaps the most significant invention in human history?

Seems it centers on Sam going out and raising funds for "tensor chips" that are much more AI tailored than the NVIDIA chips. Sam is moving forward, trying to forward AI. The Ilya SJW faction was worried it was moving against the slow and safe approach (per the non-profit original goal).
Sam wants to put stuff out to the public to use and he wants to profit and use that to fund more progress.
The Ilya side wants to decelerate and do more "studies" to make sure its all "safe". To make sure it doesn't hurt feelings and mirrors Ilya's sense of morality.
Ilya would hold back world changing technologies that could save thousands of lives just to make AI a little "less racist" or less anti-LGBTQ.
One sees AI as a tool to benefit the world, the others want some sort of god-like being.

The press release made it sound like Sam Altman lied about something, or engaged in some type of deception.
Probably should have kept Elon's baby mamma on the board.

Heard he was fired via Google Meet. If he's successfully reinstated and Microsoft has anything to do with that return (100%), first order of business is banning Meet and requiring Teams. Embarrassing.

Seems it's just simple accelerationist vs safetyism.

I read it completely differently. One side is all about making money no matter what the potential collateral damage or implications, and the other side does not want this current iteration of AI to become the next cyberweapon.

Yes, because Helen Toner, a groomed activist, would have a totally rational take on that.

If that truly is the case, I'm team Sam forever.
