My hometown was recently rated the 21st worst place in the country to live. I'm honestly surprised it's not rated #1 worst place in the country.

It was a boom-town in the 50's 60's and 70's, then the mills shut down.

Andy Warhol, Murf the Surf, and Jaco Pastorius all lived there at one time, among other notables.

BTW, East St. Louis, Illinois was rated #1.

That place must be paradise.

I used to work a FEMA contract in St Bernard Parish. The contractor I worked with never kept Port o lets. If I had to shite, I'd go to the battlefield. Everytime I pulled in clinching my cheeks, I'd get that Johnny Horton song in my head.

Bogalusa was a great place to grow up in during the 40s and 50s. Some decent football teams, always competitive (AA - highest classification then - champs in 1949; AAA champs in 1969).

The Magic City moniker came from a NOLA newspaper about 100 years ago - the city sprang from a lumber camp in 1910 to one of the largest cities in the state by 1920.

How did this thread become so engrossed with my hometown?

Lumberjacks won the state championship in AAA either in '69 or '70

They won the state championship in 1969. I was at the state championship game with my mom and dad who had season tickets. They played in the old Dildy Memorial Stadium which was across the street from the new Lumberjack stadium. They beat LaGrange 18-7 for the 69 state AAA championship. The signifance of that team was their first black player, Don Short, who played RB. I also remember in 1977they lost to South Lafourche who was led by Bobby Hebert in the quarterfinals. There have been some great players that have come from that small town.

I was at that game too with a friend of mine whose dad had season tickets (the guy that delivered me when I was born, actually). As I recall it was a little rainy that night. Am I remembering that right?

I never knew that...it was after we moved away and I was at LSU with other things on my mind.

I have no idea how this thread turned into the History of Bogalusa.

In 1988, a DC-6 crashed on the levee killing the crew and according to legend (of which there are quite a few) the plane was carrying garments and there were bras scattered all in the marsh that people kept picking out the water for years while fishing.

That's how Noonies got their start.
