Check out the Lovers Lane area for some really cool, eclectic homes. Be sure to figure in money for flood insurance. $$$$

Cool neighborhood. Got pretty fricked up during Katrina.

OS overall is a good place to be during the big one though. My house is located within 5/10 minutes of water in both directions and did ok. A lot of OS is on higher ground than say Biloxi.

But some of that bayou water snuck up on folks in town.

St Martin really ? Vancleave wtf?

They are to ocean springs what the West Bank and 9th ward are to Garden district or Audubon place. For you Baton Rouge people baker and Plaquemine to bocage.

Ocean springs is and always has been rated one of the best school systems in the state. My classmates got full rides to duke, unc, Texas, Vanderbilt, Tulane, Georgetown etc. school is filled with professionals kids.

There is almost no crime. The crime report was actually made fun of in a skit on SNL in the 80s for how bs it was versus other cities.

It is where all the smart, wealthy good looking people live or wish they did.

There is OS and then the rest. That is the way it has always been

ETA, love Diamondhead and a great place to live. Kids don't have any close schools though.

What do you want a five minute walk to school? Diamondhead to Hancock High School is like 10 mins tops, so idk where you got that from.

Any of you guys familiar with any of the neighborhoods?

A friend moved to Beau Chene last year. Nice place, clean, inexpensive. As far as OS itself, there is a cool area downtown with several bars and restaurants within walking distance of each other. The bars have live entertainment on weekends, usually on the outdoor patios. Low crime, friendly folks, most people who live there work in Biloxi or at the Ingalls shipyard or Chevron plant.

With a $500k budget almost every subdivision in Ocean Springs is available to you. Some of the nicest IMO are Oakleigh(which is actually in the county but part of OS school district - cheaper taxes!), Magnolia Bayou, Palmetto Pointe (same situation as Oakleigh), Bayou Savoie (might be nicest in all of OS but also quite pricey)

I tried to tell them earlier in the thread but I figured the comments were out of ignorance.

St Stanislaus is literally 15 minutes away. Easy drive down 603.

BSL doesn't necessarily have any nice "subdivisions" or neighborhoods. You just have to find a good pocket. Closer to the water, the nicer. North Beach is a good area.. Cedar point is good. The closer to Waveland, the worse.

There are zero schools IN Diamondhead. Moron. I didn't say they couldn't go to school. You must have one of those famous Hancock High educations. Send th kids to Stanislaus or OLA, whichever fits.

Save the money and go to Pass High.

As far as a $500k budget, that's OT baller money in this market. Here's an example of what you can get in Ocean Springs for $300k:

Didn't go to Hancock, but I do know they have a high rated school, for Mississippi. If the guy is looking for kids activities they have it all. Prob 5 pools, one with a splash pad, great kids golf programs, tennis, several nice parks etc. But your right, he might have to drive the kids a couple miles outside of Diamonhead proper to get to school.... A 10 minute drive doesn't seem to be a huge sacrifice...

I lived in Biloxi for 5 years right before Katrina. If I had settled down and started a family back then, I would have moved to Ocean Springs. Good schools, nice arts community, decent restaurants and drinking places. And you're close to New Orleans and Mobile if you want bigger city stuff.

OS is by far the best public school system on the entire coast of you want to go that route.

If private, bay St. Louis is the place to be, although there is a catholic school (st Patrick's) in north Biloxi that is great as well.

As far as one neighborhood in OS that's best for kids, it's impossible to name just one. Several to choose from. You'll have to make a trip over to discover for yourself. If you do, and if you talk to a realtor or anyone in the area, specify you want OS public school and not st Martin. There are areas in OS that are party of the Jackson county school
District (st Martin) rather than city (OS).

Overal, OS is a great area to raise a family.
