We use K and M where I'm at. K for Kilo, M for Million. Bossman said it's back assward to use MM when theres only one M in Million. Gotta agree with him there
Your boss's logic is so dumb it's actually making my head hurt thinking about it right now.

The proper shorthand for million has always been MM.

That is definitely atrocious. Considering that MCF is the midstream standard for “thousand cubic feet” I have no idea what 3k MCF is supposed to mean.
When it comes to flow measurements, I have never seen one M used for “million”. Downstream, refineries often use MBD to describe capacity in thousand of barrels per day.
As far as dollar figures, I’ve seen the opposite.. I usually see $5M for million or $500k for thousand.
It gets weird with energy measurements. If it’s metric, it’s usally k for thousand or M for million per the metric system norms e.g. kW or MW. If it’s imperial units, it’s usually the opposite e.g. MBTU or MMBTU.

Let’s talk about this one. Why are there two B’s in the abbreviation for barrel?

In the early 1860's, when oil production began, there was no standard container for oil, so oil and petroleum products were stored and transported in barrels of all different shapes and sizes (beer barrels, fish barrels, molasses barrels, turpentine barrels, etc.). By the early 1870's, the 42-gallon barrel had been adopted as the standard for oil trade. This was 2 gallons per barrel more than the 40-gallon standard used by many other industries at the time. The extra 2 gallons was to allow for evaporation and leaking during transport (most barrels were made of wood). Standard Oil began manufacturing 42 gallon barrels that were blue to be used for transporting petroleum. The use of a blue barrel, abbreviated "bbl," guaranteed a buyer that this was a 42-gallon barrel.

Work in downstream O&G finance and use MM for millions and usually K for 1,000’s only in emails. For reporting we usually use MM and report in millions.

This adds to my point. Kilo and Mega are meant to modify units of measurement like watts, meters, joules, etc. Kilodollar and Megadollar do not make sense.
3k MCF is supposed to be 3 MMCF as it is written in our annual reports.

It's close to one of the dumbest things I've heard him say but if I'm being honest not even in the Top 10.

M is for mil which is the latin prefix of 1,000 (think M in Roman numerals). MM is 1,000 x 1,000 which is 1 million. I personally use K and MM for thousand and million respectively but I'm not in accounting.
