Yet it is still more than twice as populous as the second largest US city, Los Angeles. Of course, the top 50 is dominated by Asian cities, but I didn’t realize how much distance they’d put between themselves and New York, or how many had passed New York since I last looked at a list like this.

Tokyo alone has a number 10% of the entire population of the United States.

Florida also has more people than the state of New York, but don't try to tell that to a random circa July 2020 Covidiot on Twitter. The fricker won't even believe the US census.

It is perhaps unsurprising that the majority of the most populous cities in the world are in the two most populated countries in the world, China and India. Among these are Shanghai and Beijing, with populations of 25 and 22 million respectively, Delhi (27 million), and Mumbai (over 21.5 million).

However, Tokyo is the largest city in the world if the entire Tokyo metro area is included, with a total of more than 38 million residents.

New York would be #10 if they used metro area like they did for Tokyo.

These things that use population within the city limits only are meaningless.

I'm not sure that you have a firm grasp on how to truly measure the size of a city.

For instance, New Delhi has a population slightly larger than Baton Rouge's, but it's metro area has the population of the state of Texas.

No, but I have a firm grasp on how to Google “most populated cities in the world”.

This list doesn't use a consistent definition.

Asian cities are insanely large, much larger than most people realize. There are at least a dozen Asian cities larger than New York that you’ve likely never heard of.

It’s more than just them. And really the only reason Europe largely isn’t like that is due to how many people died from the Plague and moved to the Americas.

High C may not, but he’s in good company. Apparently neither does the UN

quote:

The United Nations uses three definitions for what constitutes a city, as not all cities in all jurisdictions are classified using the same criteria.

Oh really? Because I just googled world's largest cities, and it had NYC at number 7.
