My mother is in an assisted living facility.
There were a number of residents who fell ill a few weeks ago and they quickly blamed it on some bad soup that was served.
I question that excuse
1) I'm sorry to hear that
2) It's happened where there was a stomach bug that was rampant through our building .. some got it and some didn't and most had eaten the same thing. I'm not saying that's what it was but it is possible.

When that rep said that there was used PPE in his yard, my thought was close that place the F down. There's ZERO excuse for PPE to EVER leave the building. That's disturbing and disgusting.

Yes it is
The head of maintenance where my Grandpa is wouldn’t stand for that
(Same owner)
He’s a great guy that takes his job seriously & takes the time to visit with my Grandpa
ETA
I am sure he was livid, a family decided to do window visits by having the resident open the window & they removed the screen

When I'm there, I "probably" spend more time visiting than I do working. Just don't tell my boss.

Well the level of isolation prompted by all of this has to have an effect on those people. In the snap of a finger the most important part of their mental health “socialization “ was stripped from them.
I don’t blame on sight workers. From what I can see the vast majority are doing a decent job in a situation that has never been seen and LDH is about as competent as the DMV. Sending a state agency into these facilities won’t help a damn thing.

Uh, when it starts killing residents, it’ll probably be a big deal.
Ask the home in Pointe Coupee how getting in that building has worked out.

Well I agree — that state can’t do anything that our people didn’t do. The only thing they couldn’t get were thermometers and I was able to find 10 so I bought them and brought them there.
We do have some depressed people — one had stated she doesn’t want to live. Another has seemingly all of a sudden turned psychotic.
It is hard on them. Window visits helped most for a while but idk how long before they’ll let visitors back in. We have had admits in a month or more unless they were ours returning from the hospital.
I’m thinking if they can’t cisit, families won’t want to admit their loved ones and will try to take care of them at home. Just my two cents.

In a perfect world the activities director would spend 30 minutes in a residents room talking to them
It may take 2 weeks to cover all residents but it would be more attention than they are getting now
Unfortunately with staff shortages admins are having to fill in for other areas
We are lucky because my Grandpa is 100% in his right mind & has a phone in his room
Since they only offer internet phone I’m sure a lot of residents can’t afford it
He does have bad days & he keeps asking about opening bs k up, I told him today hopefully by July we can visit
He calls almost everyday, tells me what he had for lunch & supper, how many walks he took that day & if & who he saw out in the hall
The CNA’s & nurses do their best but when they are short staffed they don’t have time to spend visiting
He had a new admit across the hall, he only lasted a few weeks
My heart broke for him, his family couldn’t move him in & he never saw them again
They also didn’t get to say goodbye which has to be devastating

The assisted living community my husband’s grandmother lives in is allowing outdoor scheduled tent visits this weekend. I’m assuming we’ll need to be masked. Is this safe??? Shes 102 and for her age is in good health and exceptional cognition. She’s at the Blake in Lafayette btw. I know of no positive cases in her facility.
ETA. With social distancing of course. Basically we’ll have an audience. We are making signs and posters. It will be hard for her to hear with masks though. It’s a 40 minute time slot.

My mother was one of the ones who got the sickest (according to the staff, since no one can go in there) And she is seemingly over it now. She's 88. If she gets Covid19, or the flu, I'd doubt she'd survive.

If my grandmother was 102 and I had a chance to visit, I’d jump on it. Figure out a way to distantly take pics. I mean my thinking is she’s 102. Why not. She’ll be so glad to see someone other than staff!!
(ETA yes that's old but covid or no covid, how long does one love? Take the opportunity with precautions!!)

Well we had some that died that I was surprised and some that didn’t that we all surely thought would. Nothing made sense for me in this way.

That’s awesome & I would do it in a heartbeat
You should also be able to bring her something, the staff will have to sanitize but I have dropped off candy bars & pictures that were laminated so they could be wiped down
Having an audience will also help those that don’t have anyone to visit them

We will absolutely be cautious. She’s lovely and I am crying here thinking of her. Thanks for the encouragement. We were thinking the exact same. Every day is borrowed for all of us, but she is realistically beyond expectations in so many ways. She’s so smart and amazing and her memory and story telling is wild. She’s been through all it.
