I’m guessing that due to her size of the structure and the size of the fire itself, there really isn’t much they can do at this point to stop it.
Really, at this point, I think President Trump’s idea of using firefighting tankers is the best option. Don’t know how long it would take to scramble one and get it there though.

They’re getting water on it now thankfully

looks like it is mostly scaffolding that is on fire
That’s cause the entire roof is now a smoldering ruin inside the walls.

Are you even allowed to fly over Paris? Hopefully they would make an exception for this.

Do the French even have the tanker planes like used to fight wildfires in the American West? I kind of doubt they do

I thought the thread title was a joke. That really sucks.

I have no idea. But I think the only hope of saving the place is if they employ water tankers.

It is the historical nature of the building that will be lost, the icons, antiquities it contains, The Rose Window!!! OMG NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! I believe the Rose Window is 36 ft across or more, all stained glass!!!

Fox is reporting the entire structure is engulfed and is a total loss

I'm curious how long a rebuild could take. The building itself took hundreds of years. By modern standards I'm sure they could do it quickly, but the Segrada Familia even with modern techniques has taken over a 100 years
That was new construction and built completely with donations. The length of the build is part of it's charm.
They could put a new roof on Notre Dame within 2 years if they wanted it done in that time frame. Hell, One World Trade Center was built from the ground up in 8 years.

I assume if the French had these readily available they already would have used them.
Or maybe something designed to fight forest fires isn't going to do as much good against a building fire where you are trying to hit a much smaller target.

I don’t know. I’d imagine them or Belgium or Germany would have at least some. There’s still a whole lot of woodland in Europe.
Of course even if they did, it would take a while to fill it up and get it airborne.

Its gone. Just like that. A piece of history.

You are assuming they even have a tanker plane at their disposal. Much less one fueled with a crew ready to fly. At this point I'm not sure how much it would even help

The stone base is still there. They will rebuild the roof and spire.

Church spokesman says "nothing will remain of the frame of the church."
Damn.
Damn.

I understand that it isn't doing much, but at least the appearance of firefighters on the scene is better than nothing.
